The referendum conduct is part of the package as stipulated in the
Comprehensive Peace Accord signed on January 9, 2005. Though still
pending over the coming six months period, the referendum itself
represents the international aspiration for the benefit of the
marginalized groups, should it come to a full exercise. Even if it is
mixed with different beliefs, doubts, and uncertainties, the idea behind
the conduct of this referendum is to ensure that southern Sudanese break
the long silence that would bring them to culminate the world standard
they have never dreamt for over the past decades. The objective of the
referendum as put forth with the conditions of “identity claim,”
earmarked the importance of realizing the long lasting struggle that
claimed millions of lives. A grief longer than what the world had never
expected will soon be brought to ease if southern Sudanese know the
objective of their long held struggle dated back to 1955 under the
auspices of AnyaNyas movements (e.g. Anyanya I, Anyanya II.)
To the current generation, the 2011 year would be envisioned as the year
of exodus to southern Sudanese, and also it is a time of echoing to the
international community that we are not born slave of someone that has
an identity of a human like us. Unless, God the creator of the living
species is the one that enslaved us, otherwise, the fate of
acknowledging to the world our right is right here knocking the door
which will soon break the unexpected. We are bringing to the attention
of the people that know the truth and believe in an ideal world the long
suffering southern children have undergone under cruel master that does
not believe the importance of human being. Our social belief is changed
for polity—a constitutional democracy—making us acknowledged the
importance of human kind and all the rights and privileges compared with
other human species around the globe.
The nation states that claimed for visible identities from around the
globe made it possible, and their struggle was recognized
internationally--marking today those nations as the nations within the
dormant nations that vehemently exercise the full rights and privileges,
and the honour of a sovereignty states. Those who don’t believe in
these realistic events should bear with me in the following examples why
it would be so.
A plebiscite was conducted by Armenian on 5th July 1995
resulted into the birth of the Republic of Armenia. It was to the
people of the Republic of Armenia to break the long yoke under the cruel
rule, and identify themselves as the people they are today. Their
authority through free elections, referendums and local self government
institutions and officials, has defined what would later comes to the
term Republic of Armenia.
Similarly, during Georgian-Ossetian conflict in the year 1990s, south
Ossetia became an independence state in the same manner likewise with
the Republic of Armenia. Greater Yugoslavia also burst to
multi-independence states such as Bosnia, Serbia, and Montenegro from
1992-1995. To the Eritrean, the same style of gaining their
independence state was conducted in the year 1997-1998, after long years
of fighting against Mangistu Hailu Mariam regime, bringing the tyranny
regime to hold nothing than just to unfold the gear of freeing Eritrean.
The United Kingdom referendum of 1975 was a “post-legislature referendum
held on 5th of June 1975 in the United Kingdom to gauge
support for the country’s continued membership of the European Economic
Community (EEC)” (Wikipedia) to legitimize their struggle of not keeping
up with what was illegitimate system.
To this day, all these important events were held under much heated
circumstance to which it is not far from happening in a country we all
know, the Sudan. The worst case scenario is soon likely to been seen,
yet our state has already gained recognition. If our East African
brothers recognize our sovereign state that means—the plus other
countries globally will collaboratively form a queue of legitimizing
their choice to offer their full service-recognition to our State. What
we need to do from now on is to iron out our long standing differences
without gauging who is who and which party is the best. The making of a
nation does come with universal objective, and inclusively identify the
need of all the people, for the benefit of maintaining trust to achieve
the goal of everyone’s dream.
We are people with the same mental capacity, and mighty power to stand
for our right. If the above mentioned countries and the rest that I
have not mentioned made it to what it means for them today, and so do we
to bring to the world standard the soon to be called South Sudan or
under any given name necessary chosen for our country to be recognized
for. The objective of opting for secession is the acknowledgement of
our universal values. The rights and privileges we don’t have over the
past decades would soon come to full acknowledgement.
But our sole objective before approaching the referendum has to have
universal trust among ourselves by deviating ourselves from such and
such that do not represent the trust we would build for the making of
this one time goal of the life time. A goal that would come about with
mixed believes needs our hearts, spirits, and physical collectiveness
and match to the street with one heart, one soul, and one goal to
suppress the long suffering from the oppressor. This will be the day
our legitimate struggle gains international recognition, should we
prepare for it southerners!!
