United Nations is being silly and unfair to Nuer nation

BY: Gattua̱k C. Guek, MAY/17/2014, SSN;

Since the faked coup war began five months ago, a lot of things have gone unpredictably wrong under the United Nations protection, in particular under the supervision of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan or UNMISS.

Nuer civilians who form the larger number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) were either agitated, kidnapped or dragged out from under the hands of UN troops and officials in Juba, and for the calmness of UN, this had led to the massacre of many Nuer civilians in Bor camp where the armed Dinka Bor youth and SPLA soldiers overpowered the unstable Indian peacekeepers unit, which forms part of the UNMISS team.

The UNMISS who at first had downplayed the severity of the situation as well as the numbers of the Nuer civilians that had been butchered in Juba, something that was seen as fishy and was deemed as a lack of honesty from the UN whom had also refused the relocation of the trapped civilians in Juba, Bor, Malakal and Bhar el Ghazal region.

The UN might truly think its brazen failure to intervene may not be questioned but that is untrue, because unarmed Nuer civilians are yet being abused and dragged out from their gates by Salva Kiir’s Tiger guards.

United Nations is two communities, a global organisation aimed to maintain peace and a security body, to safeguard basic human rights, provide humanitarian aid to hungry and displaced persons and to provide international law.

Since its formation on 24 October 1945, UN has been working entirely to bring to end starvation, conflicts and diseases that are upsetting the human progress, however, in the case of South Sudan; UN has been unjust and really silly to the Nuer people who are largely locked inside UNMISS camps.

The Living conditions for example, for those who are stuck in Juba’s Tongping camp are described as ‘impossible living conditions’ by Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) on its official homepage on 5 February 2014.

This is because infectious diseases spread quickly and high numbers of diarrhoeal diseases are an everyday thing due to the lack of clean water. More than 40,000 of IDPS are squeezed into two crowded camps and as a result of that the living conditions are believed to be unbearable, especially for newborn babies, young mothers, wounded, disabled and elderly persons, and too often the response of the UN for those trapped is so often far too little.

The UN seems to be showing less care in terms of providing humanitarian aid including food and medicines though the Nuer civilians are entitled to.

Officials from the UNMISS were opposing to the then upraised number of Nuer civilians murdered in Juba genocide, for what reason one may ask, no one comprehends.

Somewhere around December 15-20 over 7,000 unarmed Nuer civilians were systematically slaughtered by Salva Kiir’s armed tiger battalion, and instead the UN diplomats were quoted by BBC as saying on December 18 only 500 were killed.

The UN was reluctant to disclose the full truth and attested that there was something shady happening because on those 5 straight days Nuer civilians were being targeted based on their ethnicities, and sufficient evidences of who were targeted were seen on those whom were chased into the UN camps, burned in their homes and the bodies that lay scattered down on the streets.

Specially, when the directed ‘door to door’ operations were conducted in Nuer inhabited suburbs such as in Gudelo, Manga, and Khoor-William, and yet the UN were hesitant to report the correct figures until when the International Crisis Group suggested that 10,000 people may have died. Consequently, this was the unfairness of the UNMISS team.

Of course, the UN could provide protection to those lucky ones who made it to UNMISS compounds in South Sudan. However, there is some sort of criticism going around particularly from the IDPs as they claim that UN troops have failed to secure their safety.

My trapped twin brothers, nephew, uncle and cousins in UN camps in Juba also see no freedom. Since December for instance, around 80 persons have gone missing and are presumed kidnapped by tiger guards from their gates in Juba and the UNMISS team has never reported any missing persons.

It is perhaps the Salva Kiir’s bribery team may have reached officials inside, otherwise internally displaced persons who are registered under the UN protection cannot just disappear as such.

Many uncounted numbers of civilians were evidently mistreated and lugged out from under the hands of UN troops in Juba, Bor, Bentiu and Malakal and that was an undisputed letdown.

Salva Kiir, the illegitimate president
Ban Ki-Moon and his team should not fear Salva Kiir for he has lost legitimacy due to his failure for not ending this war that has displaced millions, though his aides are backing him in instigating more bloodshed.

Several civilians who lost their lives and some who are yet trapped were clearly because of him and his tiger guards. Kiir has also lost 80% of Upper Nile region where the oil is pumped out from, whereas 70% of his national army the SPLA are either defected or uncommitted to him.

In addition, a great number of the invited foreign troops can be found everywhere in S. Sudan. The UN, EU, IGAD and Troika should not thus be blindfolded by Kiir as citizens have had enough of his actions that are dragging the country into further mayhem.

Salva Kiir thus far deserves only isolation and condemnation for failing his own nation.

UNMISS’s Bor Camp massacre on 17 April 2014
On this tragic day, Nuer civilians were caught by surprise when the armed Dinka youth and SPLA soldiers stormed their base. Over 147 persons included children and women were suddenly shot dead along with some youths who tried to jump over the fences.

What made this tragic disastrous was that the small Indian peacekeeping force alleged to be only 30 men according to Upper Nile Times was overwhelmingly chased away. Of course, this brutal attack on guiltless civilians could have been avoided if the UN troops were in their thousands.

And to worsen the situation the UN officials until now did not disclose the correct number of those perished. One would now wonder if this UN protection was meant for certain group.

Battles for Malakal
Opposition forces are often seen as victors but when they seized Malakal for the 2nd time (Jan. 14) and 3rd round (Feb. 18), their actions were doomed by the UN and US despite the fact that Koch, Guit and Leer counties of Unity State were blazed by the SPLA and their allied forces when the signed ceasefire was already effective on January 23rd.

The UN claims were largely against the guiltless white army who did not cause the destruction.

Not only that, unforgettable atrocities were also instigated by the SPLA in many parts of Upper Nile region. On December 20 for example, over 17 Nuer civilians and MPs included Bang Duop Lam who tried to escape death from Malakal to Ulang were intercepted and executed by the mixed SPLA soldiers and Dinka Ngok youth in Baliet, and also for more details refer to Daniel Wuor Jok paper summited on April 21 in SouthSudanNation.com.

Within the same week over 75 Nuer vendors, students and oil workers who got panicked by the Malakal ethnic onslaughts were denied access to UNMISS camp by General Nhial Batoang in Paloich and before they even tried to walk some 300 KM to Nasir, they were gunned down in bushlands.

Besides, another 300 Nuer families included children and wives of those defected soldiers from Wadekona and Kaka who were travelling along the Nile River by boat to Malakal on February 4 for search of UN protection were intercepted and burned to death in a place called Lul between Kodok and Malakal by the SPLA soldiers under the command of Gen. Johnson Oliny.

On this particular incident there was only a sole survivor, a woman. Gerger is another scene of war crimes where over 300 civilians were brutally butchered on April 25 on its port by the same army only this time, under the order of Brig. Gen. Guot Akuei, and yet the UNMISS leadership under Hilde Johnson and Toby Lanzer had never mentioned nor condemned any of these shocking events perpetrated by the regime.

But when the ferry capsized on the Nile prior to pro-Machar forces assault Malakal on February 18 it was condemned by the UN and world leaders including Salva Kiir himself only because the drowned majority were Dinka civilians.

Last but not least, on May 9 a renewed truce inked by Salva Kiir and Machar was once again dishonoured. Government troops and their allied forces attacked Bentiu on May 10 making everyone wonder if Kiir is a man of peace.

Ulang, Nasir and Ayod were before that torched in a time when rebels were committed to the signed Cessation of Hostilities and again the UN response was negative. The only good thing UN does is condemning both sides for atrocities that were perpetrated by the mighty SPLA forces.

Does this mean UN is not a friend of Nuer people, if not then it should consider the succeeding recommendations?
 Provide further security protection by deploying more of UN troops
 Provide adequate medicines and food including to those starving civilians in the rebels controlled areas by air dropping food.
 Provide land and war transports to relocate the trapped Nuer civilians in Juba, Bor, Malakal and Bhar el Ghazal region to Nuer-land
 UN should also condemn and order all foreign troops (UPDF, SPLM-N, JEM, etc.) to exit South Sudan for they are worsening the crisis.

Otherwise, the United Nations goals of consolidating peace and security, protecting human rights, providing humanitarian aid to starving and displaced persons and providing universal law to all global citizens would not be achieved if those Nuer civilians in Juba, Bor, Malakal and Bahr el Ghazal region are not served equally.

The UNMISS should be fairer in its games by providing enough medicines and food. It should also learn not only to condemn rebels but also to quickly condemn the SPLA and its allied forces of JEM, SPLM-N and Uganda’s UPDF when they attack rebel positions as they are famous for violating Cessation of Hostilities.

Otherwise, this UNMISS operating in South Sudan will be discredited if it’s only backing Salva Kiir and his infamous regime and turns its blind eyes on Nuer nation.

Hilde Johnson and Toby Lanzer should thus fight hard on behalf of those victimised civilians locked in UN camps since war crimes, human rights violations, atrocities and sexual extortion are being easily committed, and also to avoid criticism.

    Guattack C. Guek,
You are a typical Nuer. You easily complain when at times others should complain against you. You people have exposed the Nuer indecency to the whole world. You are too talkative, impatient and unorganized. And again you have the pretence and propaganda rivaled only by the Arabs.

But can anyone blame you…most of you are half baked. It needs so many other decades for complete civilization to enter your brains.

You call yourselves the Nuer Nation and ‘another Israel in East Africa’. You make the world not only laugh at you but people look at you and think of zoo.

Ngundeng said a lot and in one of his prophesies he said that, “my people Nuer will suffer the most in Sudan because they don’t wait for conclusions”. That is true. The Nuer do grab anything as it lands and they don’t analyze well in order to make good decisions.

You complain so much about UPDF, how on earth don’t you expect others to complain about SAF, JANJAWEED, Eritrea and some elites in the West that are supporting you with weapons, ammunitions and manpower?

The Nuer leaders like Marial Benjamin, Simon Kun, Dr Monytuil, James Hoth, Gordon Buay are national leaders but the Nuer masses are blindfolded easily by Dr Riek and they think Riek was the promised son of Ngundeng. I believe that one day, South Sudan will be ruled by a Nuer son but it will never be Riek.

Don’t blame UN or UNMISS now. They have grid their best to help you. You appreciate whatever they did to you.

  2. Gatluak,

You have said all man. The UN, US, EU, IGAD, and UNIMISS are also part of Massacre of Nuer in Juba. You see when hundreds of thousand of Nuer massacred by Kiir’s regime on December 16, 2013, the UN, US, EU, and UNIMISS did not condemn the killing. In addition, when Nuer in UNIMISS protection in Bor were killed, the UN, US, and UNIMISS did not condemned the killing of innocent nuer either. 165 were killed but UN reported only 30 people killed and 170 were wounded but UNIMISS did not reported the wounded people.

However, when SPLA-IO took Bentiu from SS army, and killed JEM soldiers who dumped their guns and when hiding into churches and Mosques, the UNIMISS, US, IGAD, and African Union condemned the killing so strongly. And call those soldiers killed in Bentiu “Darfur traders”. Every time, the SPLA-In Opposition gain momentum, the UN and US will call for peace talk between the two parties. However, when these organization sees Kiir is wining they reluctance to condemn the advancement of Kiir’s mercenaries forces.

This is a great article. Please post it on Sudan tribune too.

    Ha Ha Ha

Some people are not ashamed of telling lies. Who on the earth can believe these necked lies . Brother better tell the Nuers in the camps to return to their houses. We are people of the same nation and no body will harm them. There are Nuers living in Juba, malakal, Bentue Wau, Bor and many other places and nobody harmed them. Stop misleading our own brothers because you are instead condemning them to die because of your hidden agenda to become a big person should Riek have succeeded in his plans. You are all forgiven. Come back and we proceed with the building of our nation. Instead of making such lame augments, appeal to our Nuer brothers to come out of the IDP camps so that their children will go to school. Security is provided for those who will choose to return to their families as some have done. None among those who have returned is harmed or killed. Lets preach peace instead of hatred. You need to know that a lie can not be sustained for long time because at the end people will know the truth. We did not need this fighting because there is no need for as to kill each other. We are brothers and sisters of the same Nation South Sudan.

  4. Dear Cousins: Majongdit and Alex:

I heard you enough. You Dinka you are double blinded, liars, confused primitive animals with no reasoning ability and critical thinking. You like to lead people but you do not know how to lead them. You treat people like if they are your sheep, goat, and cows. You are brainless, shameless, greedy, selfish, and cowards community with goopy and drunkard president who knows only how to put his black hat on his head, nothing else.

You brought shame to this beloved country, you power greedy useless community. You started a war and when Nuer responded to your tribal and greediness war, you rush to other countries and beg them to fight the war for you and then you claim their victories as your own victory over rebels and Nuer, you are selfish unethical human being.

Nowadays, I come to realize that the reason Equatorians call you Dinka “Primitive Animals” is because you are gang, liars, and thief community, which believe in violence and thievery to store the wealth of a country for your own families benefits. Now the Greater Equatoria is fighting along side with you, but still you do not recognize their effort. Who can trust you in South Sudan greedy and violence wild animals.

Your nutcase Dinka community is full of fools, bunch of liars, with foolish, and lunatic president. You declared war on 15th Dec 2013 by massacring innocent Nuer shamelessly in Juba in the watchful of whole world. When Nuer answered to your shameful war, your coward president brought Kenya, Uganda, Egypt, Rwanda, and Buruidi fighters to fight against Nuer and you still beg Sudan, Ethiopia, and Tanzania to join the war while the 63 tribes of South Sudan are still fighting in your side too but you have not defeated Nuer yet. In your mind, how many more countries do you need and how many more tribes do you need to defeat Nuer?

I remember that Daughter of Equatoria advised you Dinka, you vulture community that “If you are brave and man enough face your rival alone” she means that if you are strong enough like you claim all the times that you are the strongest community in South Sudan face Nuer by yourself without bringing in other countries and other tribes in the war.

Cousins: your kingdom must come to an end this time. Although your drunkard president and his witchcrafts advisors brought Kenya, Uganda, Egypt, Rwanda, Buruidi, JEM, and SPLA-N armies to fight against Nuer tribe only, the war will not end unless these mercenaries move out from South Sudan, Kiir step aside, democratic principles have been applied, and federalism has taken root.

    • Majongdit says:

      Bentiu Ramaran,

In lies, pretence and propaganda no one can defeat a Nuer.

You can even see the manner with which you say a lie with much ease. You are used to it.
Any person with brain in this world cannot believe your array of lies on Kenya, Uganda, Egypt, JEM, SPLM-N engaging the small Nuer.

Sin when did you become brave? You become brave only when fighting Dinka?
My friend, even the West has realized that Dinka remains central to stability of South Sudan. A well placed British official told the Americans that “Dinka and South Sudan are quite synomous” and that History of South Sudan grants so much to the Dinka.

So, my Nuer cousin, I am encouraging to work for peace and drop your nonsense and propaganda – the world already knows us.

    • alex says:

      Dear Bentue

Lets leave all those useless talks. Could we support the peace process now rather than writing nonsense. If your group of Nuers are good in fighting, I wish you should add on to that intelligence. Ask yourself why is you own group being opposed by the enlightened Nuer people. If all the nationals of the countries you mentioned above were brought to help us fight your group, you have won the war and war still complaining and telling lies. Could we give peace chance and you come to prove to us that, this time the next president will be from your group. It is shame brother, even the eleven people you were shouting for their release have dumped you down. You fail to recruit from other tribes in South Sudan. I think this is the time for your group to sit down and think seriously. Your own allies are even opposed to the war you are pursuing. The war should be fought on ballot box but not through preaching hatred which is even opposed by some of your own tribe mates. Go to Sudan Tribune of today even sudan government admitted you people brought Janjwide, meseriya to fight in Bentue. How could your leaders agree to make such stupid mistakes.. These evidence if found to be through, it is a big blow to your group and it proves you are agents of Khartoum governments. So brother earlier the better otherwise even soon your own people will reject your group. The world is distancing themselves from your group though at beginning you manage to convince them with your lies and war machine propaganda. Your group actions proves that your group are not competent, trustworthy, barbaric and are not even fighting for true democracy. Now they told your leader clearly to accept peace so the ball is in your hands. This is not time to lie but it is time to show maturity and sincerity. If Dinkas are lairs come and prove your words during elections. I am not lairing prepare for a total electoral defeat.

  5. Bia says:

Be advise my friend, peace that we all yearn for will not come when Salva remain the president. It’s would be a great insult to all the dead if we can allow that. And by the way, the government as it’s right now is Dinka government with kir being a dinka president. All the sellout nuers and equatorian are just there to appease the dinka. Truth has to be told even if it sound tribalistic. So, don’t fool yourself. The war is not over, it’s just begining unless Kir stepdown or stay away from interim government as the head. I pray and hope for peace, but any peace that will betray the deceased is not a peace.

    • alex says:

      Dear Bia

It is useless for us to kill ourselves. Peace is the only way out brother. There is no point of our brothers and sisters living in such deplorable conditions in the IDP camps. Do not condemn these innocent people to die in those camps because of a simplistic reason that you want a Nuer to be president. Lets us encourage the people to come out so that their children can go to school and the parents can go to dig or work. It is undemocratic when you insist president Kiir should step down. It should be the people of South Sudan to decide that. Any tribe can not say that. It is all of us and that can be done through voting. A civilised form of democracy is practised by not forcing your own thinking on others. If you think some of the Nuers and equatorians are sell out to Dinka, you need to respect their decisions. Lets work for peace and come and prove your popularity during elections but if you just want to force things brother, that is no longer a democracy. No civilised people will agree with your terms of democracy or peace. The world has spoken and even we ourselves have spoken we need peace. These war is senseless and it is destroying our unity as people from one nation. War is no helpful to all of us and power gained through war can not be sustained. So the best thing is for us to elect the person we want to lead us but not preaching war. See the Palestinians for years have been fighting but they fail to achieve what they want through arm struggle. So can we follow the foot steps of GANDI and MANDELA so that we can earn respect and praise by the civilised community. It is crystal clear your group alone can not lead South Sudan if the rest of the people oppose you. So the only way is for us to sit down and talk peace instead of talking and spreading lies and unfounded rumours. The world is tried of helping us and now we should sit down and work hard and develop our economy so that we will be able to contribute something to the United Nations. No always us being feed.

  6. Robert says:

Can you please shut up and stop talking Nuer and address the scale of damage done to people of Bor and Upper Nile as a result of Reick commands to Nuer Kill them all and leave no one in Upper Nile except Nuer. Be ashamed to say something about Nuer at the moment because majority of people have enough with Reik Macher the Racist Nuer Doctor who really deserve run Nuer villagenot people of South Sudan whom he killed and genocide for many decades.

  7. Alex,

Please do not twist the reality. If you Dinka want to rule this country for life, then you can do it in a good faith and there is a possibility to do it if you are smart enough. What happen in Juba is not about giving leadership to Nuer. It is about having good election and rewrite constitution that would limit the president power. For example, we have more than ten candidates that want to challenge the president in 2015. Among these candidate only one Nuer that was Riek and you Dinka you had three candidates. If you Dinka are confident that you will win the election, then why didn’t you let the election go head by letting the parliament go to the pool to elect a party chairmanship? and why you targeted Nuer most than the other candidates?

On June 7, 2011 Dr. Machar drafted a two five terms for the president of South Sudan and Kirr refused to listen to what the vice president told him. In your mind, you Dinka tell us how do you want to run the country?

For Cousin Majongdit, there is no way that you can deny the involvement of foreigners troops in South Sudan conflict. Instead of barking at me like dogs, satisfy yourself by clicking these links: These links will tell you the numbers of foreign troops that are fighting Nuer in South Sudan.

  8. Thon Giei says:

You have done enough advises on peace. Whoever sets fire carelessly definitely will be burnt by the same fire. War is war. Now let us work for peace before it is too late for peace itself.
Those now refusing peace today, tommorrow you will see them runing after peace.
They do not want peace but they sit comfortably to write messages of war while their children are eating hambergers and all delicious foof in the west. let them go for war. But the poor Nuers in the UN camps need to go for peace. Above all, Nuers IDPs committed no crime but took refuge out of fear for their lives
