The most misconstrued and misunderstood concept by Jieng Council of Elders

BY: Dr. Peter Kopling, MAY/19/2015, SSN;

In response to the well-received article by Simon Kur published in, as well as, a reader on, Mr. Dengchol Machar Atem, a self-purported Jieng faithful, reacted in the comment sections, and addressing Mr. Kur, stated, “In your own article, Simon Kur, one wonders whether inciting hatred between communities is a way forward. As an intellectual, why not preach for peace, love, togetherness, humbleness etc. rather than just inciting hatred.”

It should be pointed out that, this is a very common Jieng Position in response to a dissatisfied and a grumbling nation. What made this unique is, this was a Jieng responding to another Jieng! It seems, while all Jiengs may consider themselves to be one people, the elite in power consider themselves superior to other Jiengs and that not all Jiengs are created equal.

Take Simon Kur for example, his article brought hope in my heart, telling me, when Jiengs consider South Sudan first, then there is hope for us to be under one nation.

However, Mr. Atem’s reaction tells me those who do not sing the popular songs coming out of Juba, controlled by the infamous Jieng Council of Elders are considered to be not true Jiengs, worst traitors.

Alas! How about Madam Garang Mabior, wife of Dr. John Garang, and her Children? If they are not Jieng for opposing the current genocidal Tyranny in Juba, then who is?

I discover when Southerners complain about the bondages they suffer under the Jieng government, the Jieng people consider it as incitement of tribal violence and when their fellow Jieng complain, they are considered Traitors! Why is this?

Mr Atem, have you ever asked the question, why we, Southerners, in the first place fought the Jalabas? Was it because they are brown in color and we are black or was it because they have “Amarats” and we live in grass-roofed houses?

Yes, I will say it, was it because they have dresses and you Jieng then mostly ran naked in your villages?

From the behaviors of the Jieng government, it seems, your fight, contrary to the rest of South Sudanese against the Jalaba, was mainly due to material things and the desire for power.

This is very evident, given that as soon as the CPA was signed, like children rushing to take the front seats in class, you the Jiengs ran and grabbed all that is meaningful to South Sudanese, to include even other peoples ancestral lands, as you are totally numb to justice and equality for and with other southern brethren.

Look no further than in Juba, every vehicle with GOSS number plate on it, likely has a Jieng driving it. Government money buys most V8 Vehicles and a Jieng driving it. Jieng owns most “Amarats” and the ones walking around looking important and carrying an air of invincibility and authority while dressed in suits are likely the Jieng!

The street moneychangers in all cities in South Sudan are mostly illiterate Jiengs, relatives of those in high places.

Mr. Atem, have you realized what you are saying? What the Jiengs like you are doing is this! You have all taken the advantageous positions in South Sudan, from government positions to wealth, from Military forces to the land itself!

You are comfortable with the way things are and you have no quarrel with the status quo because it benefits you, or at minimum this government is not harmful to you as to the rest of us.

Things can remain like this forever and you neither see nothing wrong with it nor any need to change it!

You do not want to rock the boat because doing so will threaten all these Jiengs holdings, thus when those who are at disadvantage because of your privileges are crying out loud (These writings of mine included), you take it as inciting of violence, because in this violence you stand to loose the most.

Why because the rest of us have already lost all to you except for our lives but in itself is at risk! Whereas for you the Jiengs, you stand much to loose if true equality were to kick in, thus you do not want any writings to expose these evil deeds.

From the perspective of those of us suffering under the Jiengs colonization and oppressions, we see our writings as consequence of your evil and un-brotherly ACTIONS! It is these oppressive and colonial ACTION of the Jiengs inciting Violence and breeding divisions not the words written in response to them!

The actions gives birth to the writings! If you are truly for one nation, then you will preach to your fellow Jieng to stop ACTIONS that incite violence, if we talk about it or not.

You should ask us as to what is it that we really want? What is it that we consider brotherhood or one nation!

Indeed, if nationhood and peace matter to you, do not preach about it as you suggested, show it to us, live by example, live and behave like a brother not like an enemy.

What you do to me, brothers do not do! Don’t knock me in the head and when I cry, you then turn around say, STOP crying, by doing so you are provoking disunity and inciting violence!

What is nationhood in the world of the Jiengs? What is brotherhood for a Jieng? Emerging from Nomadic lives to becoming settlers.

Those who traditionally have no sentimental values to fixed place and cry for a cow’s rather than a brother’s death are now the ones in the drivers seat charting the path for our national brotherhood, is it any wonder it is disastrous?

Is brotherhood in the Jieng’s world not simply an alliance to protect the cows at all costs even death to oneself, thus what seems bravery is indeed human sacrifices for the lives of cows, isn’t this actually primitivism at its highest order?

I will tell you for the rest of us what brotherhood is not. It is not letting you sit on my great grandfather’s and father’s land, it is not letting your cows graze freely in my farm, it is not your cows being safer in the country than my children! It is not letting you take my sister by force.

The greatest ills the Jiengs have engineered in South Sudan are ethnic displacement and land grabbing. Unless any peace brings an end to this evil we shall be locked in perpetual war.

Was this not at the core of our 50 years of struggles against the Arabs? It surprises me that the shadowy Jieng Council of elders has not learned this lesson the great Satan in the North themselves came to bitterly swallow.

Brotherhood to us is not letting you Jieng occupy all the critical posts in the country: The presidency, Defense minister, Chief of staff, Minister of interior, Chief Justice etc.

So Mr. Atem, as you can see this is neither my government nor that of the nation, this is not a national government but rather JIENG NATION! What makes it mine?

Why do I want it to stay peaceful, why do I want it to last forever? What makes you different and better than the Jalaba occupiers that came before you?

Therefore, its being a malignant Government, robbing my Children of their tomorrow and giving it to your Children alone in exclusivity, I want it to fall! Simply, because your Children will do worse to mine!

I want nothing to do with Jieng nation but all to do with a national government!

I said it in the past and someone said it recently, Nationhood is family-hood. In a family you have your brother. He has his house and you have yours, he has his wife and you have yours. To have peace you must respect his house and his wife. You cannot cry fault when you impose yourself in his home and he denounces you and kicks you out.

Unity does not mean you squat in your brothers’ house and sleep with his wife and reduce his personal space. You have your house and your wife. What makes you family is Mutual respect!

I know I am right because the golden rule says, “DO UNTO OTHERS AS THOU WOULD HAVE THEM DO UNTO YOU.”

Mr. Atem, just imagine if for whatever reason a given tribe convinced themselves that they have rights to everything in South Sudan in exclusion of others and literally occupies South Sudan as you the Jiengs have down, will your (Jiengs) reactions be any different from ours?

If the table where to be turned, will you still hold the same position you articulated above?

If Riek Machar was the President of South Sudan and turned around and killed Dinka and clear Juba of Dinkas as Kiir did on Black December 2013 against the Nuer, will you (Jiengs) not have done worse than what the Nuer did to you in revenge attacks?

Therefore, choose this day between brotherhood by actions vs. continuing in the path of enmity, which shall continue to bleed the nation. If those of us who expose this evil action are silenced like Isaiah Abraham or not! As you can see, he does not talk anymore, are we any better?

(He who maintains silence in the face of a massacre is a murderer himself)

  1. Opiombira Kiirendeazele says:

Patriotic Dinkas needs to do the right thing. The issues of land should be resolved, Ancestral lands should be respected> Most Southerners will stay happy in their villages as long as there is no insecurities or being displaced from their lands by the Jiengs or any other nomadic tribes. The Dinkas need to change their Cow based economies. They need to industrialized Cow raising. Until this changes Cows will be source of death in South Sudan.

    • Francis Mangok Angeir says:

I agree with you Opionmbira, the Minister of Agriculture should have to be responsible and look for the way how to industrialize cow raising I do not also like the way our nomadic pastoralists moving their animals to the cities. I agree our communities need to be taught to understand the between the city and cattle camp. Yes, our pastoralists use animals for a wide variety of purposes such as marriages, milk, meat, transportations and trading, but we should have to keep them away from the capital city like Juba.
I blame our intellectuals in the government for allowing the cows to move in the city and I will never support that such responsibility we should have to know the different between urban and rural. Minister of Agriculture should have to discourage the movement of the cows and begin to teach our Southern Sudanese nomadic pastoralists how to keep their cattle away from cities otherwise our cities will be meaningless. I appreciated your argument and God bless you.

      • AGUMUT says:

In the Global cattle or livestock are not only in Urban or rural areas, but the are also around big cities, but not in the city centres. Farmers are also exist around capital like Juba, please Juba itself is not the best Capital in the world.Farmers and cattle are not criminals, they are the best people who live of their own. They are not cattle raiding like those Murle and Nuer.

    • AGUMUT says:

Farmers and Cattle keepers are not criminals and they have nothing to do with insecurity in Juba. Internationally, most criminals are those who were born in cities because big cities are divided into rich are poor. Cattle keepers children are not easy to commit crimes.

  2. Francis Mangok Angeir says:

Dr. Peter Kopling, I am totally agreeing with you for every accusation and generalization you make on Jieng, but if I were you I should say some of Jieng are evils because it is not all the Jieng are evils or driving V8 and have GOSS plate number on their cars. Unfortunately, not all the Jineg have million of dollars in their account may be Mr. Atem has that kind of money in his account. Some Jieng have never see Southern Sudanese Pound since independent of the country. I think we should have to avoid the generalization and deal with some of South Sudanese who are against the future of South Sudan. In your article, I would like to tell you all Jieng are not evil or perfect because human beings are born with sins even in your community there are many like that. In addition, I think the government of South Sudan has been corrupted by some of South Sudanese, but not only Jieng because within the government there have been non- Jieng ministers and they are millionaires I do not want to mention their names.

I am a Mounyjang, but I have never, never drivers V8 or seen Southern Sudanese Pound. Can you also call me evil or millionaire Dr. Peter? I do not want to stop you from generalization, but I would like you to respect your education. You should have to know the different between the criminals and innocents otherwise there is no need for being educated.

You also talk about illiterates and nakedness, I think if you go out from Juba and travel around South Sudan you will see some of naked Southern Sudanese like Jieng. I think in South Sudan there are many illiterates people in our communities. We have to be logic and tell the truth because we are Southern Sudanese even thought I am a Mounyjang. We have to be reasonable and think like intellectuals and also learn to know who is evil and who is not, who is driving V8 and who is no, who is destroy the future of Southern Sudanese people and who is not.

Dr. Peter Kopling if you go to every corner where Jieng are living you will see some of Jieng are dying from hunger and diseases, but you assume all Jieng are millionaires and drive V8 with GOSS plate number one their cars that is a negative thinking and you need to be taught in order to think effectively . Brother, people like you should have to fight for the unity of people instead of breaking them into pieces.

Unfortunately, I am not blaming you because there are many Southern Sudanese go to school and come out with tribalism degrees and is that why South Sudan has been in crisis. Some of our intellectuals are like those who never been at school because they came out with fake agrees. How do you call yourself educated while you do not know how to play effective role to bring the change to your society or know the different between those Jieng who have million of dollars in their account and those who do not have anything.

You know I love peace because peace bring the development, freedom and stability in the country, but war bring the destruction. Dr. Peter, who will bring the peace in the country if people like you encourage the tribalism? I thought you Southern Sudanese intellectuals will continue preaching the peace and teach those illiterates to know how to read and write, but you failed and behave like them. I love South Sudan and I hope God will bless those innocents.

  3. Kenyi says:

Nothing is wonderful like your brotherly article to fellow brothers Jieng. But they always close their eyes, ears tight to make sure they do not see the truth and hear it. Time will tell. If Equatoria, Murlei and Fertit were to join the dance now; which side do thing will they go to?

    • Francis Mangok Angeir says:

Kenyi and Peter, I do not want you Equatorian to think in that way, but I want you to be peacemakers by teaching us how to love one another and understand what does it means to be Southern Sudanese. I encourage you to form Equatorian Council of Elders to go out and preach the peace and love to Jieng and Nuer otherwise you will end up like us. I truly understand your desperation war always make people upset even those who want to help they will never get the way to help the situation, but let us try to preach the peace instead of tribalism or mobilizing others to take one side. Most of us who understand the important of peace, love and freedom are disappointed, but let us pray to God to bring the peace to our people.

Unfortunately, I do not want to comment what you call “your brotherly article fellow brothers Jieng”. Yes, I do not want to deny myself as Mounyjang, but I have my own philosophy and thought. God did not create human beings equal otherwise there will be no black and white. My character and the way I address the issues is different from other Jieng and I think also in your community there are people like that. I appreciated your ideas because people learn from one another and God bless you folks.

  4. False Millionaire says:

    Dr Kopling,

I hope the content of your potentially excellent article was not hijacked by the notion of settling a grudge with,”Mr Dengchol Machar Atem”,based on the context of his response to,Mr Simon Kur’s article in which you have quoted him to have asserted that,”one wonders whether inciting hatred between communities is a way forward”.

But Dr Kopling, one must not shorten to remind you that,as a Phd holder, you are in a leaque far higher than your own imagination can permit you to see.You hold a place of a great scholar capable of percieving things in a wider sphere that must never minimize the value of RSS as a nation in preference of a region and that of the society in preference of one’s tribal loyalties. Before having your article published, one would have hoped that you should have made deep analysis to obtain conclusions as to the nature of the government led by a jieng president, the jieng council of elders and the dinka as a tribe to which the majority of ordinary jieng citizens belong.

If you are a regular reader on this forum, one assumes you ought to have not missed comments on debates that provided conclusions that:the government led by a jieng president is a misruling government that has failed the nation and the society in general within which are the dinka ordinary citizens. That the allegation of the role of the jieng council of elders in misguiding the government is undeniable and that the jieng council of elders is a defacto organization that is irrelevant to jieng aspirations. In this context, the jieng, like the rest of RSS citizens, are victims of the consequencies of the misruling government.

None of the above conclusions gives any bearing in your article. So you have forced the way to give the impression that you have a fit and that you are fed up of everything:the the misruling government led by a dinka citizen, the jieng council of elders which is a defacto organization that is irrelevant to jieng aspirations, the dinka as a tribe and the jieng ordinary citizens. In brief, your article is simply a declaration of tribal war on dinka and jieng ordinary citizens. The question is,is it the best objective that will bring changes for a better RSS?!!!

  5. son of man says:

It’s very unfortunate that we have such p’ple in south sudan , to destroy this tribalic gov’t you do not have to assume that all jiengs are the ones causing the mess but Mr . Kiir and the likes so that Dr. shud style up you the p’ple who are giving Kiir more time to stay in power ok

  6. Tyson says:

The Jieng are abnormal human beings, too deformed to be reformed, barbaric with the dead ones being more friendly than alive Jiengs. It ponders much why the so called educated Jieng cannot speak of the evil in their communities.
More research is needed on this clone of human beings who behave similar to Boko Haram and the notorius El Shabab of Somalia. Because they behave all the same (educated or iliterate), the Jieng have successfully made South Sudan a failed state. There is no single dollars in the national cofers and the total collapse of the economy including the government is at hand!!!!

  7. AGUMUT says:

The government have to protect Farmers and cattle keepers like they do to private sectors because Cattle keepers have nothing to do with insecurity in all South’s big cites. They are victims and who need protection. Why those who have no livestock talk write nonsense?

    • Francis Mangok Angeir says:

Hi Agumut, no one say government should not have to protect the farmers or cattle keepers, but most people say animals should not be allowed to the cities like Juba period. Let us be open minded ok, I love you.

  8. False Millionaire says:

Please hang yourself and die to be able to escape from the,”…abnormal human beings, too deformed to be reformed, barbaric…”, and so join,”the dead ones being more friendly than alive jiengs”.Certainly some ugandans and Rawandans with human narrow characteristics like yours and your likes might have entertained the same thoughts against their fellow countrymen under deep circumstances of political, social, and economic frustrations, like the case of RSS today, before God send them Museveni and Kegamé.They are among happiest citizens on earth today under the proper conditions of law and order.Other forces who see things differently than you will still fight on for law, justice and order for all.

  9. Bol says:

    Dr Peter Kopling,
what a typical output of a ( Born to Hate) individual! Good luck with ( your yet to be born country) .

  10. Odiongo Reus says:

Dr. Kopling, your point of view is understandable. I know there is no thief who can say he/she is a thief. We are watching whatever the Jieng people are doing and even God knows but there is time for everything. The Jieng has destroyed the image and the future of RSS and none of them can realize that instead they do more evil. I can’t believe Jieng has human mind to reason, even animals can reason than Jieng, I am sorry that God created such devils in South Sudan. I wish they would have been with clever Arabs to destroy them, God forbid.

Jieng, enjoy now and know that the world is moving around, one day it will be mine and you will be the victims of your own deed. God punish you! abeg!!

  11. Alier Gai says:

    Brother Reus,
Your prayers against Jieng will do what goes around comes around. It is a price you will be paying for in the end. Do we have Lado Gore in Dinka tribe destroying the country because of a single post he failed to grape? You pray for him? Do we have someone by the name of Riek Macher in Dinka tribe who badly wanted to be president by gun and force? You pray for him? Do Dinka has militia of its own? You pray for militia? If these people are not human wanted criminals, then they are God wanted evils. Let us pray together for all these wrongs. But know that God is not that foolish to listen closely to these rubbishes from insane people who need extra care from the community. I have no comment about the article, for it has been anything that is made for itself. Most of the like people have made the internet their escaping place where they express their personal problems with a clear spell of their daily guilt being seen by public. Why do we talk about national politics than the problems that are reducing persons from seeing things the right ways? You and I need help. We should pray for one another’s well-being than bad wishes. We are not oriented to run politics but the goodness of the tribes. You pray for our tribes?
