Remembering Dr. John I am so grateful to congratulate my south Sudanese people for remembering our fallen heroes and as a matter of fact, Dr John was a great leader who brought us peace and my advice to my people is that we need peace in our states to avoid tribal conflicts and look forward for our referendum. Moses Towongo, South Sudan
Joining mainstream Eng. Mr. Charles Kisanga, thank you so much, you are speaking louder to us around the globe. Please join your mainstream in the movement with all your heart for our struggle is not to benefit others, but ourselves (South Sudanese). We had been nothing to the northerners politically, socially, economically, culturally, in term of dignity, and we had no development for long time. The northerners had been taking our resources from the land of the south for the development of the north. Shame on Lam Akol. Ariik Chol Ariik, Canada
Where were you during the war? Mr. Urbano you are an intellectual and one would have expected you to reason better than a street urchin like this. Your support for Dr. Lam Akol should not arrest your intellectual faculties. Is ‘for how long will Dinka SPLA protect you?’ meant to be a threat on my life? I may rightly conclude that you are one of the terrorists who gunned down Kwanyireth Oyath and his entourage. In this connection I have the means to protect myself and I am coming to Malakal, let me see what you and your ilk will do. Coward!!!!. Where were you during the war? Peter Adwok Nyaba
SPLA is not Dinka Urbano Tipo, you are wrong about for how long will Dinka-SPLA protect Dr. Adwok Nyaba: You are deeply indoctrinated and brainwashed by Dr. Akol’s ideology which says “let us destroy Dinka” instead of “let us free ourselves.” It is wrong to say that the problem in Collo land is a conspiracy made by Dinka against you and being executed by Dr. Nyaba. First of all, SPLA is not protecting Dr. Nyaba, but his views matched SPLA’s and Southern interest than the short glory you are pursuing in Khartoum. If false is truth like you said, then the SPLM-DC is protecting Arabs and slavery ideals from ending in Sudan. Dr. Nyaba has right to say what is good for him and Collo people as leader, an intellectual and loyal person to Southern party. By no way he is not an obstacle to you and he will never have two heads in one plan to destroy Collo people. His personal goal is freedom which sets on the merit of love, equality and success for all than individual desire you are milking. Where did you get Dinka-SPLA protection and a plan against Collo?
Second to that, SPLA is not Dinka as whole in a real sense, but a combination of all tribes in the South, including Collo people. Dinka never dominate others nor intend to invade other tribes in the South. They are people of no bias, and their identity should not be misused for political wishes. As you are barking on how is the separation of South Sudan must come against Dinka, it is quite true that it will be a different story when the independence of South Sudan is achieved; we will be in a stunned state on how things will appear. You mark my word! People will see true government acting without compromise than that claimed Dinka-SPLA you are hammering. And the Dinka tribe will continue to contribute positively to the cause and freedom beyond glory, though not in the so called “united Sudan” again. Your narrow views on this subject are mock attacks on Dinka for unusual politics, which is obvious hate. The issue is about Dr. Lam and his unclear position since the inception of the movement; however, it is not Dinka vs. Collo in the political arena. Dr. Lam Akol is not anything to us but a man of his own guilt in the history of our struggle. Who cares about him! Collo land is not Dr. Akol Lam’s mother birthright to own it by himself with no one else with that right, but native people collectively have rights to own it. It is now clear that you are following the path of a wrong guy who has no magic luck in his personal trying to turn things into his way. I am so sorry that you’re falling into the hole of unpopular Dr. Akol Lam. You are dead wrong in preaching misconception ideals for failure. Abraham, Gai, USA
Falling into the Arab net our oil money has become a thread to us these days, making our southern think-tanks to fall into Arab net. A few weeks ago one of our prominent and architect of self determination, Dr lam akol (SPLM-DC chairman) declared himself as a unionist and today Dr Justin Ambago revealed to us another prominent southern intellectual, Dr Toby Madut (Chairman of SANU) who also fell into the same ambush of unionist camp. But what really surprises me in these people is their justifications to their reservation for the southern independence. How can they assess the future of southern Sudan on the failure of SPLM/A? How can they endanger the lives of millions of people on the pretext of sustaining their life and the life of their children? I personally ask these what so called unionist, please allow the people this time to decide for their own destiny, since God created south Sudan. It used to be you the politicians deciding for this poor people. I'm not a SPLM/A member but I strongly give credit to them for allowing us southerners to decide for our own destiny. We are ready to pay a prize for independence rather than for unity that we had for the last five decades.
Regarding the our religious leader, these people we owe them great respect and love. The church was/is with us all these times of southern history and they play a great role in it, the church had been with southern people without any distinction of religion when every one had abandoned us to this grand sons of Arabian peninsula traders, I think people in government controlled areas did not forget this reality. When they take these people's stand, independence) as claimed by Dr Toby, is not out of nothing but because they know and understood the suffering of the people more than any southern politicians. We pray that may God protect them until they witness a total freedom to their people. Stephen Pitya Lako, Sudan
Homage to John Garang de Mabior, Born on June 23, 1945 and fallen heroes:
Died in air crash, July 30, 2005.
By Gabriel Makuei Tor
In pain, with the loss of a man, of no equivalent
His intelligence, His freedom-giving wisdom,
Sweet and the only one sweet song of the oppressed.
The man of the land, our stand to lean on
Sweet, were the days - we live and stand with you for sure.
As nation we lost you, like a caring father, you were.
When the Sea waves, rise high above the Sea level.
Your smartness kept us secured - holding nose above waters,
Your healthy decisions, your golden mind, your deep rooted legs
Your courageous heart - being our first weapon, our shield of 22 years
Now that you have died, how do I mourn, with dry eyes with no tears to shed?
The eyes, which have been shedding tears for a century now.
When the wild fires of Cush burned, you stood the ground,
You rescued your comrades; you hid the seeds of nations.
You resist the stigma, driven by the food-hired geese,
You restored our integrity, you made the struggle true.
You set us free, you paid the full price
We remain to take positions - the struggle continues.
Now that you kissed the earth
Not in vein, have you gone for
Never taken for granted, the service
That cut your life short, in your graveyard
Rest in peace, with our spirits and memories
You still live, in the minds and hearts of millions
Among us.
Confuting the Letter Written by Joseph Marco Entitled: “The Shilluk Kingdom Today: Challenging Dinka Invaders.” To begin with, I would like to correct Mr. Joseph Marco for claiming that Paweny Dinka of Pigi County is part of Ngok Lual E Yak. Paweny is part of Ruweng (a smaller sub-division of Padang which is made up of Panaruu of Panrieng County; Alor of Biennom County in Unity State and Paweny of Piji County in Jonglei State). Both Ngok Lual E Yak and Paweny as well as Alor, Panaruu, Ager, Nyiel, Dongjol, Abialiang, Luach, Thoi, Rut and Abyei makes up Greater Padang Dinka. With 8 counties in the country and over half a million people as per the discredited census, it is the second largest Dinka group after Dinka of Bhar El Ghazal. Going by current political division, Padang is found in Jonglei (Paweny, Thoi, Rut and Luach), Upper Nile (Ngok, Ager, Dongjol, Abialiang and Ager), Unity (Biennom and Panaruu) and Abyei.
This is the right information for you to digest whether you like or not. It is wise to understand the demographic composition of your neighbours instead of fabricating and misleading other readers.
If we were to go back to the 16th century to set the borders of tribes in South Sudan, then we must set our borders with the North, which I think is a priority. The adopted or honorary Arabs as put correctly by Dr. Francis Mading Deng in his book (The War of Visions in Sudan) must return to the Middle East because they never shared a border with us. The Luos, Maasai, Kalenjin, Teso, Turkana, Samburu of Kenya who are believed to have migrated from Sudan will be relocated to Sudan. The Acholi, Karamajong and other River Lakes Nilotes of Uganda must return to Sudan because they were in Sudan in 16th century or earlier. We can even claim Barack Obama of United States of America and crown him as the President of Sudan because his dad is a Luo. Since Luos migrated to Kenya from Sudan, then Obama is a Sudanese who has a right to claim his ancestral homeland of Bhar El Ghazal. But the question is; where would those inhabiting those localities relocate if we are go to by your assumption that the current land occupied by Paweny belonged to Shilluk in the early 16th Century?
Well, the land occupied by Shilluk in the West Bank of Nile was not theirs in the first place. I believe some people lived in that land. However, due to migration and natural factors, they could not live there any more. Mr. Joseph Marco may need to ask his community to relocate from Shilluk Kingdom because that land belonged to another tribe in the 16th century or earlier.
I think the writer does not even know what he is talking about. This is what he wrote: “The Shilluk Land (Piny Collo) boundaries were set by King Gwang(Papiti Yor Akoc) from all the corners with their neighbours to the East, West, North and South. In the area being disputed now, the boundary is 16 miles from the banks of Khor Atar and Khor Fulus going eastward into the bush.” Joseph Marco, SSN
Seriously, was Joseph born in Sudan or he read books? What political authority does the King of Shilluk have to set the borders? Joseph seems to be fabricating that Shilluk is bordering Nuers of Ayod and Fangak. This is hypocrisy of the highest order and lack of geographical knowledge of the South. In fact, the Shilluk of Tonga are the only ones bordering Laak (Fangak). This is the only border shared by Nuers and Shilluk unless the guy wants to set new boundaries. I was born in Atar, which is part of Piji County. I am wondering where Joseph would want me to relocate. I believe in migration and nomadic life style of many Sudanese tribes that took them to their current lands. It was not a mistake to migrate centuries ago. However, that migration should not used as a tool for scapegoating others and branding them as squatters/invaders. It is a brand that no one wants to carry. The only invaders who came to Sudan are Arabs. The came as traders and settled. We can’t even tell them to leave Sudan because their ancestral land has been taken up by other immigrants.
Bottom-line: Let Shilluk vacate their current territory because they settled there as a result of migration, natural disasters, wars and other unavoidable circumstances. They were not thrown from heaven and settled in Upper Nile. Dhieu Dok Minyang, Calgary Canada
Manna Shall not Fall to South Even if All Defect to SPLM: What will Southern Sudan gain at the end of the day if all have to declare their allegiance to Salva Kiir, Pagan Amum and Ann Itto? I am tempted not say allegiance to the SPLM because almost all those nomads and their jubilant receptionists at the SPLM Sub-Headquarters in Juba or elsewhere don't know how to put into practice the SPLM vision as the people would love to see it. Many South Sudanese people, and majority of SPLM members, are not only wonderful but also thrilling sycophants as far as political competence is concerned. They are very excellent in not knowing their priorities and objectives, prima facie. That is why you find nothing moving on positively in Southern Sudan because many people, especially those who call themselves leaders are very attractive in negatives of destructions. True and really true, even if the SPLM-DC disappears tomorrow after all its members declare their defection to the SPLM and given hero welcome in Juba, Malaka, Renk, Wau, Marial Bai, Rumbek, Mading Bor, Bentieu, Torit, Yambio, Yei, etc; will the current bad situation change to good one under the SPLM bad governance in the South? I don't think so and nothing new will fall down like Moses' manna from the Sinai desert, except for the SPLM and GoSS treasurers (Dr. Luka Biong and Mr. Deng Athorbei) to pay tickets and accommodate the new comers in hotels (who actually are never new as they are already well known) and then call press to write news articles on the fiasco and insult Dr. Lam as an act of humiliation. Do you know how much it has caused the SPLM to convince the former SPLM-DC's SG and Deputy Chairman and the company to defect and go to Juba to stay in a hotel and drink much bear, whisky and nyamachoma (burnt meat) on SPLM and GoSS monies without budgets? I don't think it is much less than thousands of dollars and Sudanese pounds. God have mercy on South Sudan and its poor people who are just neglected because of favoring foolishly the political prostitutes for no value! Let me cry instead of laughing!!! Dr. James Okuk
The Shilluk Kingdom Today: Challenging Dinka 'invaders' The so called “Paweny Dinka” getting a county at Pijio is a mockery. These Dinkas are part of the Ngok de Lual Yaak of Abong or Bayliet. They happen to be where they are now as a result of the Mahdist State which invaded their area in search of slaves. They escaped following the Sobat south –westwards to find themselves where they are now. The true neighbors of the Shilluk (Collo) from Pijio to Tonga on the eastern Nile are the various Nuer clans of Ayod, Fangak(Gawer), Laak etc..
The Shilluk Land(Piny Collo) boundaries were set by King Gwang(Papiti Yor Akoc) from all the corners with their neighbors to the East, West, North and South. In the area being disputed now, the boundary is 16 miles from the banks of Khor Atar and Khor Fulus going eastward into the bush.
The creation of Jongeli State by the May government of Numeri was welcomed as a means of decentralization of power. What is not welcome is the confiscation of Shilluk lands east of the Nile without any justification. Can Jongeli not include Shilluks in the same way as it includes Nuers,Dinkas, Anuaks and Murles?
The Shilluks in these confiscated areas do not recognize the Paweny as the original inhabitants. They were not there when the Shilluks fought the Funj over those lands in early sixteen century. Proper arbitration should take place to avoid instability in these lands. Joseph Marco
Southern Sudanese destiny is here! As we celebrate the newest sovereign nation of southern Sudan come 9th January 2011. Let us all take the time to reflect on that sentiment which must unite us as southerners. A deep and abiding love for our nation.
Let's look at the history of the southern Sudan and seriously assess that which will transpires over the years that lies ahead. From this let us embrace those elements which made us strong and reject that destroy us. Let us understand that while we are all proud members of individual tribes with unique and diverse cultural norms. We are bound together as one geographical Free State with purpose and place in this continent of Africa.
Now more so than ever before, we are being called upon to cast our vote wisely in the upcoming referendum come 9th January 2011. Determine your destiny and never be overshadowed by the meantime gifts which will take away your rights; to serve, help and heal the atrocities committed by the Khartoum government during the struggle.
Fellow citizens, the future of our nation is as much our responsibility as that of our families, friends and leaders back home. We either choose to tear it apart and destroy it or unites our efforts to help build and guide it towards the realization of it potential as the richest newly nation in Africa. Long live SPLM/SPLA! Bior Gibson
Speaker Wani Igga misquoted I think Speaker James Wani Igga was misquoted by reporters because he is a man who I can trust that can not make a deal with Bashir. Majok Aker Ayai, Sudan
Dr. Nyaba is Fond of Standing on the Wrong Side of History: Dear Okuc P Awol, thank you for your unwavering stand in the interest of Collo People. Let Dr. Peter Adwok Nyaba not forget that his destruction history on the Collo Kingdom is still fresh and kept alive in the people’s memory. That is why he fears and hates SPLM-DC and Dr. Lam Akol to death. It is to be recalled here that following the 31st October, 2003 declaration of merger between SPLM-United and SPLM/A, for sustainable peace in Sudan, the Government of Sudan (GoS) and its allied militia forces caused successive insecurity situations in the whole Shilluk Kingdom with the backing of some Collo politicians, exactly like what is happening now when some Collo politicians are helping the SPLA to kill the innocent people and cleanse them ethnically as well as looting their properties. About 121,900 people were displaced after their villages were burnt and some of their relatives killed in Papwojo, Nyibanyo, Nyijwado, Dinyo, Nyilwak, Obay, Pakang, Adodo, Awajwok and Alaki, the village of His Majesty Kwongo Dak Padeit. The UN agencies and NGOs doing humanitarian work were expelled from the Collo area by the killing government-militia forces so that they don't help the people to survive. Dr. Nyaba was known to have been lobbying seriously in Nairobi to see to it that the Collo kingdom is cut off from any assistance. He has also been witnessed coordinating with some Collo NCP politicians in Khartoum and Malakal to see to it that those evil acts against Collo are done perfectly. One of his daughters in Nairobi was outraged by his involvement in evil acts in the Collo Kingdom and he confessed to her that he did not think the situation could reach to that level of killings, burning and displacement as the aim was to humiliate Dr. Lam Akol. Now Dr. Nyaba is repeating the same evil deed against the Collo people but this time on the side of GoSS and its tribal army called SPLA. Will he and his company go away with it freely this time? Dr. James Okuk
Poem: 'Leave Me Alone' by Gabriel Makuei Tor
Fire-works will be put in place To celebrate the pending victory
I am not another beggar But just another nation
You refuse to listen for decades It's time for your to feel
For the deafening ears u turn Referendum is the answer
I will raise my Flag for real For the world to see, and recognize
I will make the change You refuse to follow
"Those who refuse to listen Will be made to feel."
Building the Country partially While killing other parts!!
An enemy, is always an enemy A manner less brother, will've time to tame
Khartoum! u deserver to be another border I am departing for a new County, South Sudan
You exploit, when you were to build You kill, when you were supposed to serve
We meet at the border, you refused to demarcate Good bye!
Greater crime committed by Athor Mr. Chuei Mareng, I know what it takes to be in that situation of dissatisfactions. Your outcry is heard everywhere and it is fully understood that there is something wrong going on in Pigi County. Sorry for everything that has been happening to you. The entire South is with you feeling the same pain you are experiencing. SPLA is there to save lives in the hands of unsatisfied brother to make sure that order is maintained to the fullest, and people of Pigi County should once live again in peace and harmony as citizens of Southern nation. Your long stay with SPLA now is soured and it really needs some remedies to end that unsolved case which causes fear and threat in that area. We are with you brother! Every now and then blaming and other all kinds of accusations against Southern government cannot do it all. You do your best as you can to make sure that your safety is number one goal before the rest. Be honest and fair in judgment than telling us a story we all know the head and the tail where they both lay. These are all problems in a problem you fail to step up to solve. There is no other greater crime ever committed than the crime committed by George Athor against South Sudan. Abraham Gai, USA
A Done Deal between NCP and SPLM to rig the upcoming vote in favor of Unity In accordance to comrade Wani Igga’s statement, a deal to rig southern referendum vote has been reached between the two parties [NCP and SPLM]. No wonder why the position of SPLM’s leaders has been wavy from time to time.
In some occasion these leaders would be for separation and other time they will be for unity. Their clear stance is now revealed in the statement made by the speaker. You might look at it in a different perspective, but that is what it seems to me.
So, proletariat of south Sudan can now kiss the secession dream goodbye and start brainstorming for something better instead of placing all your eggs in the basket of referendum. GatCharwearbol, USA
Shame on those who massacre Southerners It is very unfortunate to loose life of our brothers and sisters at this time while we are heading to referendum, shame on those who carry massacre against their own brothers and sisters. God bless their soul. Chol Awek Wek, Ethiopia
Security, the mother of democracy Dear GOSS security minster,
I have visited southern Sudan lately, however, if I'm asked to change something that Kiir and his officials is not doing right, I'd definitely start with security. Security means a lot to the people and of course, I'd call it "the mother of democracy." Just for specification, I mean civilian security.
Civilians are dying by thousands and yet the very GOSS is not implementing law and order across the land to stop civil-war generated criminals. Tribal conflicts over pastures is on the rise. It is a heart-breaking to see people taking steps back when peace is around the corner.
What is more confusing is that Gen. Gier Chuang Aluong and some other Goss officials are disarming the victims not the culprits, sounds weird but it is mission assigned to them by Kiir and his cabinets.
All in all, I totally appreciate all the things GOSS has done for the people of south Sudan in the last five years, however, I'd Kiir and his security team reconsider security measures including disarmament of the culprits not the victims. Damade Deng, USA
Stop unity campaign in South by Arabs Dear Southerners, we have seen now that Arabs have started mass campaign in the Southern states against secession that Southerners are expecting to achieve through voting in Jan.-2011, and they are now preaching about unity of Sudan. My suggestion- these people were not supposed be allowed to come and confuse the situation to our poor and illiterate community. We know all the educated people of the South Sudan will not accept to vote for unity but illiterate people who don't know the disadvantage of unity. If they were not trained properly to know how to vote and also the reason why we are against unity then these Arab people may confuse them to vote for unity.
Some Arabs whom were sent by NCP have entered in our Southern state of NBG today and their purpose of coming here is to start their campaign about unity and we don't expect such kind of activities to happen here just like that. Michael Malual Mawien, Aweil, South Sudan
Advice accepted Dear Brother Arual Deng Arual, you’re right. I do listen and read into the works of the great icon of American and world Civil Rights Movement, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Your advice is acceptable and I thank you very much for that. DengDit Ayok, Khartoum
Unity of Sudan is impossible: What Mr. Taha should've understood first is how the South & the North cooperated during the interim period. Many atrocities were committed by the Jallaba during the interim period some of which are: Abyei battles between the SAF & the SPLA, Malut battles, Bahr Arab (Kiir kau) battles, Timsaah battles, theft on oil revenues, Malakal battles, imposition of Sharia laws on Southerners in Khartoum... among other things. I thought Taha had the ability to anticipate the future of Sudan given its old & contemporary history. Sudan is going to split into the following new states: South Sudan, Dar fur, Eastern Sudan & Arab North Sudan. It's extremely absurd to think of confederation. Mapuor Makorou, India
All for the Referendum In about a few months toward referendum, it's time for the ten states' governors, commissioners, other states officials, and local community leaders to stand up for the next general election campaign. It's their right to reveal the matters, south is capable to rule itself as an independent country. Success of referendum will not only be in hand of the president and his office. If there isn't trouble of political mobilization in south, whoever is capable can do something in his/her local community. Moses Dang, Canada
Why is south govt. easy on Referendum? The crucial moment we fought for is just over five months away. But are the people acutely mobilized and informed about what the event means and how its outcome will affect them and their children millions of years in to the future? Well, it's clear at this point that registration is not even started let alone the program of educating the public in the entire South about the referendum. What is difficult to comprehend though is why the Southern government seems to be taking things easy here when they'd be concerned about any sort of delay to register voters. As a concerned citizen, I'd like to urge everyone who comes to this website to read or publish articles to start writing messages of concern and post them here for the consumption of policy makers in the South so that they can put things right before it's too late.
However, I'm happy with efforts being made by people like Dr Riak Machar to hammer everything in and have the referendum done as wanted by the people of South Sudan. As we all know, this referendum is the only reason for which our people died. It should not therefore be squandered as wanted by selfish blogs like Lam Akol who have sold out to the North. For this reason, I encourage the entire leadership of SPLM and individuals like president Kiir, Dr. Riak and Mr Pagan Amum. Carry on guys, bravo! History will be on your side like Dr. John Garang. Simon Jok Ajack, Australia
Remember to mention Martin Luther King in quotes Dear Dengdit Ayok, you've presented good case why the South and North of Sudan will never be one country after 2011. Thank you for that. But it seems you read/listened to some works of Martin Luther King Jr. because I could sense that from the words and expressions you used in your sentences. You'd have acknowledged him at least by use of quotes. So let us remember Dr. Martin Luther King when we use some of his works. Arual Deng Arual, Rumbek
Fighting the corrupt kingdom I'm very glad that there are still junubin (southerners) who can patch the eyes of the emerging black N.C.P in southern Sudan. Brother Omunu, you have extracted the real points that every honest and sincere Junubi harbors in his/her heart. But remember that, they will do everything to close your mouth and many others who keep-on exposing them. I hope this will never stop your pen in cracking down this new corrupt kingdom that wanted to be established in junub (South) but rather it will encourage many people with clean hands to join you in this intellectual battle. We need to heal a sickness before it development into illness. God save us from all these vices and lead us into our new independent state. Stephen Pitya, Khartoum
North Seems Better Because Opportunists Back It Up Dr. James Okuk, the reason that the North seems better is because of the opportunists like you and Dr. Lam Akol who always back them up. How would you see the weaknesses of the North if you fall in love with them? Why do you always see the South weaknesses alone and not the North?
In my understanding and based on what I have seen, North is no better than South. In the near and far future, South Sudan will out perform North Sudan as soon as we eliminate those who take opportunistic chances. What Jellaba has done for you to denounce your true brothers and sisters is only known to you.
Rome was not build in one day and South Sudan under the leadership of the 1st LT, Gen. Salva Kiir Mayardit is not exempt. Because you only see the bad things that Salva does and not the bad things that Al Bashir or NCP does, you won’t know that South Sudan is far better than the North Sudan.
One thing I admire about you, I hope it is not a pretext to find your way into getting rich quick, is your separatism attitude. I unshakably share that trait with you. Please do not fall in to Jellaba trick.
I have been to Khartoum not too long ago and our people [Junubin] who are residing there are not different from Turkana of Kenya if you know what I am taking about. It seems that we are forgetting that South Sudan is the source of slaves. Just because some of southerners are living in the North does not mean that Northerners are better than us. In fact they want us to move to Khartoum so they can enslave us.
No refuge in the North. These Junubin leave outside in the huts just like in villages and they have no source of income apart from doing manual jobs that most of Northerners do not want to do. Sometime, the Khartoum regime would come and destroy these huts, which leave them no shelter. Is this what you call refuge or safe haven? Don’t be blindly fooled by the rhetoric of Jellaba.
I truly understand that GOSS is not up to the expectations of people, but at least it tries to protect their right despite the fact that more conflicts are cropping up everywhere in south. GatCharwearlbol, USA
All southerners fought the war side by side There is one thing that makes "JUNUBIN" south Sudanese, popular. Corruption and mistreatment of minority or the so-called unfortunate, uneducated Sudanese children, men and women. It is rare that any published article on this site tells the outside world of progress or any undertakings in the interest of South Sudanese. It is only 5 five years into the CPA agreement that Southerners have smelled a new air or call it their ticket to freedom. Southern Sudan is corrupted and far from a just society. when people pronounce "unity," what comes into play is uncertainty. We have the leftists and the rightists fighting for power for their ill-gotten gains. A united southern Sudan should be like the organ system to promote a healthy environment that guarantees opportunities bearing education, employment, leisure, and promotes peace and harmony within and between generations. I'm knowledgeable of the heroes who fought and died in the battle for the freedom of our country. Let us all be reminded once again that all southerners fought the war side by side. The government should not play favoritism cards in what is assumed as protection by having DINKAS only in higher government positions. This is undemocratic and suicidal to other groups whose political aspirations are unrepresented. South Sudan is a region blessed with untapped wealth and it is shameful that those born of the land are not reaping any benefits. Bosco Khamis Lomuro, Australia .
Stop government threat to media Dear editor, I am happy for south Sudan nation for accepting realistic comments. I am far from Sudan but my heart is patriotic in spite of whatever is happening. I therefore fail to understand what a government official does to the citizens if impunity persists. I think of a way to change these strongly possessed habits of threatening the media evidenced by Miraya fm website. Greed for power is our major setback for development. Development doesn't mean erecting towers but general acceptance to individual rights not rushing to chaos. Should our leaders be divisive and fail to perform their duties? I don't suppose, dear editor, but I have failed to change southerners. Cultural difference creates division but if you visit this website as a southerner, get it right and be a southerner not your tribe's toy. Be for the nation not your stomach. Sabbath De Yacouba, Kenya
Let's roll up our sleeves together Mr. Bol, Somalization is just a political market played in vain
by Arabs against the South. It will come short sooner than later.
That term is a misconception used by few opportunists to manipulate Southern government so that they could have an open space to reach their desires. It is a term used to prescribe fear against us and against the likely new nation that seems to emerge in six months. It is a word used to hatch ugly unity between native Africans and Arabs, instead of a clear separation. I buy it less than anyone else, but let us roll up our sleeves together for action. Why Somalia now than during two decades for our struggle? Abraham Gai, USA
Correction to Gat*Bol's recent article. According to Fund for Peace - Failed State Index. Sudan came #3 after Chad, but not #2 as Gatcharwearbol puts it. On the list of 177 Countries from failed to prosperous state, Somali was #1 and Norway was #177 - bottom of the list. Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan are among the top 10 failed world states according to 2010 report from FFP. The 7 of the top 10 are African Countries according to the report. Makuei Tor Mac, USA
Enough is enough My dear brothers and sisters, it is true that South Sudan is now far better than the other previous years, let us stand together for the independence of Southern Sudan. We need not to be a second class in our own country. We have suffered a lot, therefore enough is enough. Long live Southern Sudan. Ajak Kur Samuel, Sudan
Bravo, Editor, for your well-summarized analysis Dear Editor, you are a true son of the South, a region that is seemingly cursed with a bunch of good-for-nothing leaders whose priority is their stomachs and that of their equally greedy hatchlings. "Kiir's new disastrous misrule, once again, must end," under this well titled article, you hammered some very good points that are worth applauding. Well done Sir!
Southern Sudan can only be transformed into a better place for all, only when her sons and daughters speak up in one voice, come what may!! Otherwise, this growing new oppressive and authoritarian trend of governance will not end, it will get worse and Southerners must widely open their eyes right now. Let them do away with the growing misperceptions about one another as tribes or communities, and instead pay attention to these groups of individuals who are molding themselves into first class in politico and socio-economic fields, a bunch of maggots who are making fortune out of misery! Their survival strategies include fitting Southerners against one another along tribal and geographical lines and as long as the Southern Sudanese continue to be short-sighted and brainless, the survival of these gangs is ensured and the poor masses shall forever mourn and groan in abject poverty, widespread insecurity and lack of services but without remedy.
The choice is theirs to peacefully but firmly demand good governance! Our problems as Southerners is not our tribes or diversity, but rather lack visionary leadership that unify us and which serve the people equally and transparently. But the fact remains that under this government, no community grassroots can be said to be benefitting, all are really suffering their individual problems, ranging from insecurity, some of which is perpetrated by SPLA soldiers, to lack of basic services in health, education and infrastructure. Why therefore turn against one another and sing derogatory remarks against Dinka, Nuer, Shilluk, Bari, Azande, Kakwa or any of our various tribal groups? These are all victims in their own ways. Bosco Riak, Sudan
South big to accommodate all I would like to assure Mr. Adeying that South Sudan is very big to accommodate all of us regardless of our tribes. I my self, as I am from Aweil State, I don't care which tribe dominate the government so long they represent the will of the people. But I would like to advice you, that unless you behave yourself and avoid greediness and selfishness, you will die hopeless and shameless like your uncle and traitor Lam Akol. Martin Jok, Australia
Unforgettable gift Kiir can give southerners Allow me to express my inner most felicitation to the President of Southern Sudan for the successful election to the office. This is the assurance by Southern Sudanese people to take them to the land of Canaan; that is, the promised land. Therefore the last election votes from Southern Sudanese people were not just a conventional but entrustment of task, but remember Mr. President that it is not an easy task. I assure that as you leave Egypt to the promised land, Pharoah and his army will realize that releasing you was a mistake hence will send his army after you and as you try to run away with your people.
Mr. President, Dr. Garang has done his part though God has taken him, he has handed the task to you so your current seat is the seat full of stress and a lot of task hence the only gift you can give to Southern Sudanese who are suffering in dignified silence is the gift of successful referendum next year.
Thon Ngor, South Sudan
Gen Oyai, No cheap accommodation General, I think you should have learned life's great lesson how deadly politics is, after you were thrown out in the recent election by your own community. Yet, as comrade in struggle, Salva Kiir did not hesitate to create for you a new ministry so that he can accommodate you despite being rejected by your community. However, your dedication in struggle of your people who are being oppressed by the northerners did not allow you to complete your formal education like others who also joined the struggle. But your behavior when you were minister in Regional Cooperation shocked every one who thought that you were revolutionary. You allegedly threw away your fellow comrades which will never be forgotten, and brought in your in-laws and other relatives who did not have the capability to help you during the elections. Therefore, there is a proverb that says, "when things are dark the friends are few." Victor Makur, South Sudan
Why claim Shilluk land? Those who called themselves from Pigi County are actually confusing. Their actual home is Wun-Lam the home base of Anya-nya One. Why is that they don't like the name Wun-Lam a beautiful place and come to claim Shilluk Land? Urbano Tipo, Sudan
New south-south war It is real very bad to hear that southerners are back to a south-south war . Which seems to be at a wrong time while they are just left with some few month for self determination. Wise Leaders should have at this very critical situation sit down with the rebels to settle the case before farther development. We don't want the civilians to die any more. Ismail Dominic, Sudan
Bad Beginning for FM Mr. Ali Karti Mr. Ali Karti is the appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs in the so-called government of national unity. This is the man who will be in charge of the diplomatic affairs of this country. It is very unfortunate for the government of national unity that the man entrusted with this sensitive position has started with some very arrogant statements that will not only tarnish his appearance before the international community but that of the whole country.
I don’t know how many battles were led by Mr. Karti during the war, but Mr. Karti should consult with his BOSS (El bashir) and with the President of the Government of Southern Sudan, Kiir Mayardit before talking about the war, because these two gentlemen know very well what does the word war means in real life. Both President Kiir and President Elbashir were in the front lines during war and because they very much understand what does that entail, they promised not to take this country back to war again whatsoever. Dr. Thuou Loi Cingoth, Sudan
Stop doubting the SPLM leaders' capability Who is stronger than Pagan Amuom in the politics of the Southern Sudan? I am disappointed with one of the writers who express doubt about Pagan representing southerners in the UN. The main problem with our Southern Sudanese brothers is that they do not trust anybody and they do not point out somebody who can do that work. They are always equivocal in raising their concern about the nation.
Such attitude is bad, the people should be straight forward by pointing out weaknesses and giving solution instead of pointing out weaknesses and keeping quite. It gives bad impression as if you the writer consider yourself to be the most capable. If I can ask, who is stronger than Pagan Amuom in the south as far as the politics is concerned? Pagan is the right man to go to represent the south in the UN. Stop doubting his capability, you doubting Thomases. Daniel Juol Nkomngek, Sudan
We Cannot Rely on International Community to Solve Our Problems for Us Even so it is not a sin to have international community on our side, we must try our level best first before international community intervene in our issue. People of south Sudan must help international community beforehand by uniting under one umbrella in order for the United Nations to have very constructive reason to be on our side.
International Community does not only help southern Sudanese; it is there for all the people living in our universe including the Jallaba or Arabs that we are fighting with. Therefore, Jallaba can also call upon the international community [IC] to intervene in favor of their side. Let us not be narrow-minded here by thinking that international community can only be on our side. We are dead wrong on that.
Many writers have resorted on calling to international community [IC] to rescue us, why not ourselves? For how long will we rely on international community? We are very strong nation and have wide range of educated, uneducated who are capable of solving our differences. Let international community be not our power, we must build one for ourselves.
The key to securing our self– determination or independent south Sudan nation is us adhering together after that the whole wide world, which is the international community, will see for itself our unity and it will certainly side with us knowing that we are up for the right cause.
For us crying help to the international community [IC] while we are the ones that are putting in places the means of destroying self–determination by not uniting is very lame reason to give to the IC. I suggest that before we demand IC intervening, we must first unite under one sensible cause. Then we can call upon the IC to see what we’re doing in a logical manner. Maweer Pan, USA
Such solution in your writing The Lomuche story is interesting but he hasn't suggested how to deal with such a situation. Does he want to instigate other people to rise up or has he a suggested solution? Some angry writers only waste most of their time thinking that what he/she writes will reach the population who so suffer the consequence of the injustice.
I am calling upon the writers to provide or suggest what could be the remedy or solution otherwise the writing to me is just like chasing the wind. Michael Gelon, Australia.
Vote Unity and be slaves forever I'm hereby giving my view to all southern Sudanese that those who want to vote for unity of the country is up to them, but may not lead the rest of southerners. You need to think twice on unity of Sudan. It is good to vote for unity and bad to be called second class citizens and let southerners know it well that it is now the third time for them to be given chance. Once you loose, my dear southerners, you will call yourselves slaves forever and ever. Lasu Morris, South Sudan
Be wise in Referendum vote It took 21 years to achieve CPA; I therefore, cajole my follow Southern Sudanese to cast their vote wisely during the coming referendum. Don't let just 2-minute-vote during referendum take us to years of suffering because of the current situation that can be corrected. Don't forget the past because of the current situation. Think wise and make a wise decision Southern Sudan is yours. By Thon Ngor, South Sudan
Last chance to vote for freedom It's true that the referendum is coming up but the question still remains: are we, southerners (junubeen) ready to work together as a team without favoritism by making sure we give possession to the right people? Those who are educated can speak up and explain or rise our concerns to the rest of the word for better support and also make sure we have enough security to secure our states. We need to take a good look at that and then take this last chance to vote for our freedom Gasid Smbaido, USA
To All Ngok elders, leaders and Politicians. Community Mediator would be the best way to Mediate Athor Deng Dut case. Traditionally, I can see this way would help the loss of lives and not continuing War that could spread the problem into many communities. In Twic, there was the same problem like this between Kiir and Mathok but was solved locally, and there were many lives lost in that war. Why this case can not be done traditionally?
Letting stay without solving it, is not very good sign.
I was thinking if all Ngok community leaders and politicians come together; talk to the Government of Upper Nile and Jonglei State,
after consolidation from Ngok, Rut, Thoi, Luac, Padang and Paweny. Not only Athor case, our local issues can be talked into it too.
Government is popular when there are people behind it; there is no Government without people and people without Government.
This is a good time now when it calms down to talk to Gier Chuang, Athor Deng and GOSS to stop their violence. Gieth Chol Deng, Canada
Dr. Luka Biong's habitual misinformation The meeting between the FVP and GOSS president and the Southern Generals which was coordinated by Dr. Riek Gai, an elected MP was lauded by all and it is an indication that Southerners know what they fought for no matter where they are. After the meeting at the residence of the FVP, it was described as fruitful and constructive by both sides. However, on SSTV, Luka Biong who is notorious for giving wrong pieces of advice, referred to these Generals as militias. This is a very dangerous statement by this leading figure. May I assure Mr. Luka that these Generals were integrated in SAF and commissioned with the ranks and files of the SAF just like Gen. Kiir after AAA with ID numbers and this is as per the CPA. Gordon Kong was an alternate member of the PMHC of the SPLM/A and one the competent officers assigned to command a zone in one of the axis. He came to Khartoum as a result of KPA on which the CPA was just a complementary. I'd like Mr. Luka to always put things right even when it does not please his Boss. Peter Pal, Sudan
President Kiir has done his part effectively Whether you support the President of the Government of Southern Sudan, Salva Kiir Mayardit or not, whether you have voted for him in the recent elections or not, whether you agree with him or not, one thing for sure shall be recorded in favor of our President Salva Kiir in the contemporary history of this country. No one shall doubt the fact that President Kiir has successfully managed to unite the people of Southern Sudan effectively since his inauguration as the President of the Government of Southern Sudan in 2005. This is a great achievement that the history and the people of Southern Sudan shall permanently adhere to Salva Kiir.
Unity of the people of Southern Sudan is more important than any other priority that you may think of in this crucial time of our struggle. President Kiir has successfully done that.
Whether the rest of issues are going smoothly or not, it is the responsibility of all of us to answer. It is the responsibility of each of us at our different capacities to do what is required. This is our collective responsibility; it is not the responsibility of President Kiir to monitor all of us on daily basis. It is simply impossible for him to do that.
If the Government of Southern Sudan is failing in delivering basic services to the people of Southern Sudan at the grassroots then all of us should be made accountable for that because each and everyone of us has a role to play in making the service delivery a reality on the ground. The Director General who is not keen in following up his/her duties as per the mandate is solely responsible for that and s/he should be blamed for that.
Many of us are quick to blame the leadership at the top when we are not really doing what is required of us effectively at our different level. The success will only come if each and everyone of us accept and execute his/her duties sincerely and to the best of his/her abilities. This is not difficult if we accept the fact that we are duty bound to work for our nation regardless of where and which position we occupy in the government. Dr. Thuou Loi Cingoth, South Sudan
Mr. James Hoth Is SPLA Lt. General of SPLM and Salva Kiir Only: No, don't thank the SPLA Lt. General and Chief of General Staff, Mr. James Hoth Mai because he spoiled his good reconciliatory speech with the conclusion he made at the end to pay allegiance to Mr. Salva Kiir, promising to do what ever his boss shall orders him to do even if it is evil deed. This is exactly how the dictators are created in history, especially when army generals under General Chiefs of Staff like James Hoth Mai pay godly allegiance to bad leaders. Look at this unfortunate statement Mr. Mai concluded his speech with: "Comrade C-IN-C we congratulate you and all the SPLM candidates for your overwhelming victory during April general election; and we are very proud of you and always be at your disposal and ready to sacrifice more lives should any situation dictate."(16 May, 2010). This is a sure indication that the SPLA is not an army of Southern Sudan for all Southern Sudanese and their other political parties. With what Mr. Mai has confirmed, the SPLA has become an army of SPLM leaders and members only rather than the army of South Sudan. God have mercy on Southerners who do not belong to SPLM and are not friends or relatives of Mr. Salva Kiir and Mr. James Hoth Mai. However one time in near future, and with the help of George Athor, Gatlwak Gai, David Yauyau, Dau Aturbong, Alfred Gore and other emerging liberators of the oppressed Southerners by the SPLM/A, these unprotected Southerners shall have the right army to shelter them, their properties and other valuables! It is becoming clear that the referendum SPLM leaders are trying to champion by default shall not lead to independence of South Sudan but Federation or Confederation or New War. In truth shall we always trust and nothing else but the truth. Dr. James Okuk.
Just an Idea on the Hunger Crisis in South Sudan
WARRAP, Sudan (Reuters) MAY 28– Adeem Thony is a widow with six children and no way to feed them, one of millions suffering from hunger in
South Sudan.
"My husband died three years ago during the cattle raids," she said in her native Dinka language as her bony limbed nine-month old baby sucked listlessly at her breast, unsatisfied as Thony herself hadn't eaten yet that day.
Thony and her family are victims of a major humanitarian crisis in south Sudan, a semi-autonomous region where half of the population of 8 million is short of food.
Corruption, mismanagement and a massive salary commitment to keep a rebel army employed and trained has diverted much needed development money. UN Rep.
Holmes was met with requests from the local population for more food, more water sources, and even a mobile network.
"We need to do more to encourage development particularly agriculture...so people can be self sufficient and don't need food aid. Resolution: Since Pres. Kiir's Warrap cronies are the many millionaires just hanging in Juba and Uganda, why not tell them to instead take their monies back home and 'liberate those widows and kids.': The land of Juba doesn't need your monies, Mr. Kiir and company. Referendum campaign should start now The GOSS under president Salva Kiir Mayardit with his ministers need to spend much time telling South Sudanese about the referendum before the due date. Since we all know that the outcome of the referendum is inconvertible in the South, then I thought that it would be valuable for our leaders to start enlightening the Southerners why referendum is important. I am indeed curious because most of our South's population are illiterate. They want thorough education especially verbal conversation from the government/SPLM. Some of them know cattle benefits more than the outcome of the referendum. Therefore, we South Sudanese need serious preparation before referendum. According to the Fraud's theory of the Psyche, the repression brings depression, whereas expression is in fact liberating. Apparently, we should not oppress ourselves by not creating an awareness to those who know less about the referendum. It would be a great idea for the GOSS to create the campaigning team so that the team can spread information to the South Sudanese about the referendum and its consequences. The team needs inclusive leaders starting from the lower level to the top. The chiefs, commissioners, and youth leaders so that they can carry out the referendum exercise as well because they have strong influence in the society.
Separation must be the choice of my people if they prefer freedom. This must be the motto of the GOSS to its citizens. The president of South Sudan should formed the team before December so that they can disclose the importance of referendum to the South Sudanese. The best outcome could not be assumed to be the best unless we acted on it.
Certainly, the GOSS need to posit their eyes on those South Sudanese who are aiming for the destabilization of our referendum because it's a difficult task. Bol D. Bol, US.
The oath of condemnation for South Sudan Mr. President, Warrap State has suffered for long due to lack of basic service to citizens and that is due to tribalism and racism that have been practice by so-called Ministers, Commissioners and people closed to you like Acuil Akoc who is allegedly a corrupt leader Warrap has ever made. For sure the newly elected Governor is going to re-appoint him as Minister or Commissioner, what is this on earth? Five years has passed without any progress seen in some ministers' expected mismanagement and embezzlement of funds and resources. People have elected you into this position you are in now.
But your problem is weakness in taking right decision at the right time, the same faces are coming back again; if you do so you have violated the will and cry of people of South Sudan about these corrupt leaders.
Finally, I expected you to appoint these honorable members we have elected to represent us in the SSLA, so could select and appoint ministers free from corruption and not these Ministers who refused to stand for election or failed election to cabinet office. Shame on you if do that after the trust we have given you. Deng John, Sudan
Give Athor what he wants General George Athor prodigality (although others decided to name it rebellion) has become a topic of discussion among southern population especially those who called themselves politicians. It is in fact disgusting to hear some southerners parroting the same tune of the real culprits. Nowadays, the common judgment passed on Athor is that he is a criminal and rebel, he should wait after referendum or go to court as Gen, Alfred Lodu Gore did. But no one dares to ask, what is the cause of his prodigality? Who has the legal right to impose party's loyalist to the southern masses? Or who has the right to rig the elections and go free and above all arresting the victims of election but also tuning to the politics of blaming the victims? I wish that south Sudan will not become another copy of old Sudan, where the citizens sides with the ruling party or whoever is strong, they are with him. Otherwise we shall have a castrated citizenry in a future independent southern Sudan nation, if at all there will be a transparent and fair referendum in the south in 2011 as it's been schedule in the CPA. I'm so pessimistic about the conducting of referendum on time and it's result.
Today during inauguration speech of president Omar Hassan Ahmed Albashir, there was no more emphasis on the issue of referendum and working hard to ensure the unity of the country as before during election campaign. So i begin to guess that there are under table tricks taking place between the two so-called ruling parties.
Hence I'm demanding president Kiir to bring George Athor home without using military means as some of his kitchen cabinet called for but rather through negotiations. If he demands for one of the key ministries let him be granted, if that can secure him back home and finish the work that he have sacrificed half of his life on it.
Secondly, Kiir has to schedule real not faltering dialogue with all the southern political parties and also the SPLM independent candidates especially Alfred Lodu, Angelina Teng, George Athor, Joseph Bokosoro and many others. Stephen Pitya, Khartoum
New productive government in south needed Southern Sudan is approaching towards the last minutes of united Sudan and heading towards independent country. A new state without proper foundation, southern Sudan is having a lot of files that need to be resolved in order for it to emerge as a nation that is able to survive and protect it's territorial sovereignty. There are issues such as security, food security, law enforcement, professionalization of government institutions, health services, political dialogue among southern political parties in order to pave way for political inclusiveness and tolerance. Above all, recognition of all the tribes in southern Sudan and their equality or equity before their government, and the list goes on. We were expecting to see new faces during the election results that are capable to give us new hope that we lost in the last five years wasted in corruption and tribalism. But to our frustration, we are forced to swallow the same corrupt individuals for another five years more. We are going to hear more rhetoric such as zero tolerance to corruption, security is our first priority and many others that are baseless and valueless. It's good for political consumption. If Kiir is sincere to his inauguration speech, let him show it in his new cabinet formation, we want new faces, young men who are productive rather than to fill-up the ministries with bunches of old and out-dated people who kept on messing things here and there. Mr. President, we want a strong state, not another Somalia or Iraq in the heart of Africa that is found on tribalism and corruption. Stephen Pitya, Khartoum
Lack of political will in south It is abundantly clear that south Sudan is lacking of political will. That is why south Sudan is justly blemished for the number of outstanding and imperative policy documents. However, we need to recognize that the lack of political will is a disease. In my view, the absence of the political will to do what is both accurate and essential is as the symptom does to the mental illness. To understand and cure this problem, it requires that South Sudan legislative Assembly (SSLA) must urgently come up with ways to heal this disease prior to the referendum so that the social health of our nation and its products can be save. South Sudan’s health problem, therefore, lies inside the South Sudan Legislative Assembly (SSLA) itself, in as much as it seems to lie in the (SSLA) which is the moral fiber of our government, perhaps, it is most appropriate to ask (SSLA) to address this serious matter. Now, what exactly is this lack of political will? It is a leader's denial or not able take responsibility for his or her society
But why is the south Sudan leader irresponsible? What assistances have been made to this constant irresponsibility by the nature of south Sudan? By its state of mind, ruling passions, and by its misconceptions about crucial aspects of economic development? Let me comment on some of these. First of all, south Sudan right now is like a cow with two heads, two in front and two behind, with each head dragging in the contrary direction from the other. Noticeably, for any two-headed cow to move correctly, one of its two heads must be destroyed. Now, since neither of these two heads on the south Sudan cow is suitable for our national survival, there is a necessity to cut off, not one, but both heads, and insert on a new head, a single head that is zealous for production, that is instructed with producer values. Moreover, two of the dominant values of the south Sudan elite today are tribalism and corruption. It is vital to understand tribalism will induce nothing but more harm to our nation.
1) Any south Sudan official who promotes total social disorder is a stumpy official and must be dealt with accordingly.
2) Any south Sudan official who robs his or her own nation and hoards the loot abroad in the vaults of its notable enemies is a Robber.
3) Any south Sudan official who signs fake foreign contracts to loot his or her own country is a treasonous official.
4) Any south Sudan official whose policies promote brain drain and resource drain from his or her country is an official who is bleeding death to the people.
5) Any south Sudan official whose members take responsibility only for his own tribe, and show no collective responsibility for the compound or street or village in which they live, is foolish official, regardless of the brightness and wisdom of its individual members.
In conclusion, any south Sudan official with any one of these characteristics is unfit to rule; and south Sudan official with all five is toxic. I suppose this proof will support the decision that south Sudan’s elite has degenerated to the point where its behavior is dominated by all five characteristics. Mind you, the quest is not for an official like Christ, but for an official of patriots who put the national interest of our country first. We need a leader whose aim is to build a strong nation of south Sudan, instead of one whose prime aspiration is to turn south Sudan, into rebel crowd of grand consumers. Chuol D, USA
Dinka generals represent on SSTV? It has become a new dawn today in the history of Southern Sudan five years after the agreement. The inauguration of the newly elected parliament was wonderful and heartbreaking to the extent that one takes a moment to remember the heroes and heroines who fell on their foreheads during the war. The other thing I would want to comment on is the fact that some days before the commemoration of the 27th anniversary of the SPLA, the SSTV in collaboration with the department of the SPLA PMO was only hosting the Dinka Generals to talk about the hardships and the operation campaigns with Arabs. This to me means that the Dinkas in the army wanted to deceive the Southerners that the war was fought by them. The innocent people of Southern Sudan must know that the only people who shed much blood were the Nuers and mainly the educated. The first battle was fought at Malual Gahoth and was indeed commanded by Cdr. William Nyuon. This was not mentioned by neither of the Dinka Generals. They talked of the operations led by Salva and Kerubino plus some of their commanders. I was also expecting the generals to mention that two GOS planes were brought down by William Nyuon.Col. Alak should have invited some Nuer commanders because some of them are alive and in active services. Next time let the Nuer or Equatorians to contribute. Peter Pal, Sudan
Strict freedom for south journalists Excellent job to the caretaker Minister of Information and GoSS as whole, by taking a serious step to warn UNMIS based radio Miraya FM and Bakhita for airing out unwarranted news, that shows that local agents have a certain perimeter and once they surpass their mandate then they need to be informed of their limit, that is a lesson that need to be learned.
The exercise of one's freedom should not be allowed to knock other people's nose, GoSS should not allow matters flow as others wish but as the people of Southern Sudan wishes which is their duty as civil servants. I know that Miraya FM is based in Khartoum and should not allow herself to be under the influences, or to please Khartoum, we shall not accept that as Southern citizens. It is a red line because we have a spotlight, thou we know that Miraya FM has helped a lot in creating employment for the Southern youth, it has provided a quick news circulation within Sudan and South Sudan in particular, we know that it has also helped in providing programs that include CPA protocols sessions. That is irrefutable fact but that should not give it a mandate to report as they wish, information system has it limits.
GoSS should not only warn Miraya FM and Bhakita radio but should also look further than that, there are many programs that are working day and night to make sure the referendum collapse. For example, the owners of the other programs like internet sites, newspapers, etc, that report matters that exacerbate conflicts and does not promote peace should be shown their boundaries, because the freedom we are claiming now has not yet come in to our hand and therefore we need to be careful on how to achieve this freedom (the independence of South Sudan).
Our local journalists should learn how to present our country-to-be in a good shape so that it attracts for her recognition by other countries in the near future, because they will too be marginalized if South Sudan failed to achieve her independence because of their misrepresentation. I wish journalists more freedom with strict instructions. Daniel Wuor Thonker, Egypt
Election criminals must be charged first Today we are saying that south Sudan is in jeopardy simply because of the recent military uprising and confrontations in Jonglei state. And every informed south Sudanese knows that the election results are all the source of the problem. But the very big question is, why did the election result itself provoke those kinds of reactions? Why are some people not satisfied with the election results? The answer is simply because a former rebel has quickly forgotten why he rebelled some years back. There had been a long series of violations of the south Sudanese laws and Athor case is that of a person who is refusing to watch bad things happening as he stands by. The chaos in the south are all attributed to those groups that showed no any respect to the south Sudanese people by manipulating election results in the broad day light against the will of the voters. These are the sick GREEDY and uncivilized people that have tarnished the credibility of our state and the course of our struggle for justice, equality and freedom. Is this action not a terrible crime in a state? Before thinking of bringing George Athor to Book, the election criminals must first be charged if the state is to have a brighter future. A concerned South Sudanese.
Giving Incentives will not make unity attractive, Dear Egypt As I was browsing online through our beloved paper Ajras Alhurriya, I came across an article where the paper quoted the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Arab Republic of Egypt saying that giving incentives to Southern Sudan before referendum is crucial to make unity attractive. Please check Ajras Alhurriya online and you will get that article. Go to www.ajrasalhurriya.net, scan through and you will read this insult from the person in charge of the diplomatic affairs of a country expected to play roles in this continent.
Giving incentives to Southern Sudan before referendum to make unity attractive as proposed by H.E the minster of foreign affairs of Egypt to me is an insult that should not be left unchallenged. The leadership in the Government of Southern Sudan must ask the minister of foreign affairs to apologize to the people of Southern Sudan. Even if some Southern Sudanese have wrongly decided to take refuge in Egypt, Southern Sudanese are proud and mature enough to decide what is good for them without getting incentives from anyone.
The people of Egypt in general and the minister of foreign affairs in particular must read the history of the struggle of the people of Southern Sudan correctly. Southern Sudan is rich enough to be given incentives by anybody including Egypt and the minister of foreign affairs even if he believes that he has got all the money of the world. The Nile passes through Southern Sudan before flowing to Egypt. Most of the oil produced in Sudan is in the soil of Southern Sudan. We are rich enough to be cheated with Chocolate dear Egypt.
The people of Southern Sudan will decide their own fate in 2011 based on the historical facts in this country. It will not be based on some incentives given to them using resources which were originally stolen from Southern Sudan. The minister of foreign affairs of Egypt should work hard to convince the NCP that racial or religious discrimination is the not best way forward especially in the complicated country like Sudan. H.E should work hard to convince NCP that true democratic transformation is the best remedy in this country. Kids are the only being that may be cheated using some incentives sometime. Even kids could not be cheated all the time my dear friend. Let Egypt take its incentives somewhere else, but not to Southern Sudan. Dr. Thuou Loi Cingoth, Sudan
Athor against the system not the SPLM/A visions. The SPLM under Salva Kiir is corrupted by his own people from Warrap. This is why Gen. Athor is to be brought to justice while those who're supposed to have been brought to justice are from Warrap state and including Taban Deng Gai from Unity state. These are ringleaders deployed by Kiir Mayardit to be a safe heaven him later on when he retires. Athor is against the system not about governorship, the system which is robbing the votes like property. A system which defends the legacy of individualism not about the people of southern Sudan. I support resistance against the system of Kiir of Warrap. Padang son, Sudan
Dinka Padang first to cause disunity It is the Dinka Padang-community, who're the first to have resorted to creation of disunity spirit and disharmony relationship among Southern Sudanese tribes, especially in the Upper Nile State-Malakal area. That was the time when the Dinka Padang community, in the Upper Nile State first started to conspire against the Shilluk community and their ancestral lands, in 2008-2009.The Dinka Padang of Upper Nile and Jongelie State, were secretly advocating, lobbying and planning to confiscate and grab Shilluk's ancestral Lands. And those Dinka Ngok/Padang conspiracy led to the massacring of innocent unarmed Shilluks civilians, at Ankadair and Abanimum Shilluk areas respectively. This was in front of Al-Bashir, Salva Kiir, and Dr. Riek Machar, all respectively present at the scene of this tribal fight that was instigated and incited by the Dinkas of Padang, especially the Ngok of Abwong and Akok,45 kilometers east of Malakal Shilluk's county. So you must you must blame George Athor alone, because his unruly behavior is actually a reflection of the typical aggressive and the unruly general behavior of the whole Dinka Pandang community of Upper Nile State and the Jonglei. Gen.George Athor must be handled with care. The release by the SPLA spokesman that he would be crushed militarily is a lie.Athor is one the fiercest field commander who can't easily be caught. I'd only call upon the President of GOSS to take the course of peaceful approach in dealing with him. Look,Gens. Bol Kong and Ayuen Alier tried to use force but he repulsed them. Kuol Manyang said he wanted Athor to either be caught alive or dead. That's laughable and mere morale support. My advice to Comrade Salva is that don't listen to wrong advice and leave George out of the next cabinet. He helped in the realization of the peace we're now enjoying. He's still helpful and will continue to be in the ranks and files of the SPLA especially after the post-referendum era. Peter Pal, Sudan
Makuei has right to reject dialogue Chol, I doubt you know what you're talking about other than being Athor supporter and critic of Gen. Kuol and Justice Makuei. You questioned Makuei's right to rejection the dialogue.
If you've the right to write as a Sudanese, then Makuei has right to express his opinion. He was asked by the media what he thinks and he should tell the truth or what he prefers in that situation. Why question him?
I do not even want to ask you about Kuol now; I will give time to reset your mind and think about what you wrote and how you presented it. Michael Kuol, Sudan
SPLM Chapter urges peaceful negotiation with Athor The SPLM Calgary Chapter called an emergency meeting on May 9, 2010 regarding the catastrophic, and dubious decision taken by former independence candidate for Governorship and former Deputy Chief of Staff, Major General George Athor Deng who bloodshed the life of innocent citizens of South Sudan in Doleib, Pigi county in Northern Jonglei State. The aimed of the meeting was to ask the opinion of Southern Sudanese concern citizens about the clashes that happened in Doleib between Gen. Athor’s and SPLA forces which caused the lives of civilians of Southern Sudan. The SPLM members and Southern Sudanese citizens vigorously condemn the action taken by Gen. George Athor Deng while the southern Sudanese citizens are awaiting the upcoming referendum in 2011.
We would also like to urge Gen. George Athor very strongly not to repeat what had happened in two weeks ago. We all knew that you were one of the military influential figures of the SPLA/M during the liberation struggle, more committed and loyal to SPLA/M system, but now we wanted you not to obliterate your wonderful legacy by killing your own citizens and fellow Comrades whom you had previously scarified your life to rescue them from Arab domination. They offered their precious live voluntarily during the movement for the name of our mother land, human rights and freedom to all marginalized people of Sudan.
Sudanese citizens in Canada would appreciate your understanding and well thought with respect to lives of South Sudanese citizens before further causalities. We strongly urged you to cooperate and respect any peaceful resolution offer by the GoSS and SPLM leadership because losing election cannot be resolved through military means which may jeopardize the main objectives of the SPLA/M that based on justice, peace, equality, unity and free will in which we had been fighting for more than two decades. Mr. General George Athor Deng, we want you be more vigilant, realistic and caution that the enemy of peace always seeking for opportunity to destabilize the CPA. We are hereafter to assure you that it would be unwise decision to destruct this wonderful destiny that caused the life of more than 2.5 million citizens of South Sudan in a last minute.
Yes for Peace, No for War, SPLM National Second Convention’s Motto,
President Kiir Mayardit,
We the SPLM members and Sudanese community elders in Calgary realized that General Deng rebelled against the GoSS. We knew that GoSS has a military capability to capture one General with no resistance, but we the SPLM members and Sudanese elders in Calgary are requesting the GoSS to sustain peace through negotiation table whereby the third parties particularly the Sudan peace partners like IGAD, African Union, Church leaders, and Padang Community elders would be given a chance to mediate peace before military retaliation. We really appealed to GoSS and SPLM leadership to forgive General Deng since continuation of this conflict will claim more lives of our civilians and soldiers while we all want them to enjoy peace dividend. Your Excellency, we the Southern Sudanese citizens in Calgary are kindly requesting the government of southern Sudan, under your leadership to exhaust all necessary mechanisms with consideration of the following resolutions:
First and foremost, prolonging this internal conflict, would caused insecurity and instability which will hidden the preparation of the imminent referendum in 2011 whereby people of South Sudan would determine their future either to retain unity of Sudan or opt for South Sudan separate government as one of the cornerstones of liberation struggle.
Secondly, turning guns against citizens is completely irrelevant because we will lose innocent lives of our people at this juncture and it will undermine ultimate roles of the SPLA army while their main function is to defend South Sudan and to maintain the CPA.
Thirdly, our partner is very serious advocating false allegation to international community that we people of south Sudan are incapable of running our own affairs and warns the international community to refrain from supporting secession of South Sudan. We the SPLM Calgary and other Sudanese elders want the SPLM leadership and the government of southern Sudan to prove them wrong this time and alert the people in the world that we the Southerners are more than capable to govern ourselves by maintaining lasting peace in South Sudan.
Almighty God will rest the souls of SPLA soldiers who lost their lives in peace and keep the liberation struggle continue. (Signed): Stephen Yang Chuol Luak, SPLM Chairperson, Calgary, Canada
Peaceful solution for Gen. Athor I am so impressed with how you precisely covered the situation in Southern Sudan so clearly. A situation like this would have been handled in a peaceful means if the government of Southern Sudan did not act with force. This incident should have been treated as minor and prescribed an ongoing investigation to how this situation occurred. This situation is soon going to go out of hand if not given a careful consideration. I suggest the government of Southern Sudan refrained from using force at this time for the sake of containing the fire and finding a solution gradually with no rush. Believe it or not, General Athor will gain support from civilians and those who are not supporting the separation of the South from North and derail the referendum process if not considered a peaceful resolution by the government of South Sudan. The thing I hate the most is that anything that happens from military itself ends up destroying the civilian's lives. To protect the lives of innocent civilians, the government of South Sudan needs to find a meaningful way to handle this situation without more lives to lose. Thanks John Kuek, USA
Athor one of you - Dear Dinka Community I was Born In Lou Nuer and my advice to you is about George Athor. I think George Athor is one of your eyes in Dinka Community. I know his heart is Dinka.
Very well, about 10 years ago, we tried to capture him, but we failed. If you chased your brother, okay, that is good. Thank you very much if you get my message. Most of you do not know me. In 1997 I was in Wonadol, I think Commander Malual Majiok knows me. Lam Bol Nhial, Canada
Kiir must apologize and form new admin, That is it, people must do the same to face the truest not to hide behind the table of Kiir because he is in power. Kiir must apologize to the whole southern Sudan people. And come out with new administration, know the right of humanity in south Sudan especially for the coming month if we want to build a new democratic South Sudan. I know and the whole south Sudan people know that Kiir is the most corruption administration.
Therefore, I request Kiir to form a multi-party administration to include the entire south Sudan and apologize in front of people about the previous administration. Abulevi Victor, Sudan
SPLM bad faith and selfishness First of all, I would to convey my thanks and gratitude & appreciation to our brother, Chan Chual, for his courageous way. I believe this is how we can solve our problems as southern Sudanese. I want to assure that, what happened during the election in south is shameful & unacceptable, it was a big mistake committed by the leadership of SPLM. bad faith + weakness + selfishness + hatred among the leadership in south, especially SPLM will lead to disaster. So we must respect each other and give everybody his rights without segregation. All the southerners contributed in the struggle & no body is better than the other, so let's respect each other and those who created these situations should apologize to southern Sudanese people. David Laku Darius, Libya
Freedom Fighters Seemed to be left in LIMBO: During the long struggle freedom fighters who would survive the war were promised milk & honey. Martyrs were also to be valued $ their families to be cared for. Unfortunately, all those promises are now forgotten, leave alone being met. Moreover, no services to people. What really did we fight for, to enrich Garang, Kiir, Wani, Riek & Gier's families? They are getting richer day by day & the poor masses are without services & getting poorer day by day. The trend is showing continuously. Oh! God, it is all up with us, sacrifices have turned to curses. Save us, Oh! God, for no one is showing any compassion to us, we only see wolves widening their mouths to swallow us each day. M.M.Makoi Macuoc, Sudan
The issue of George Athor is by no way a forgiven crime.
He'll reap what he sow. The same thing to underminers of peace and freedom will face in the court of law. Let's wait and see what happens after referendum prime time is passed. They are playing with fire and they don't know how dangerous it is.
Isaiah, you're one of 99 sheep that caused Kiir Mayardit to panic during your lost time. Abraham Gai, (The Machingela) Sudan
Best way for complaints It is very sad news for us south Sudanese to hear fighting occurred because of loosing the election. South Sudan people are losing lives for nothing. Let our brother stop fighting and go back to Juba to raise his complaint. That's the suitable ways to address issues. Raphael Nhial Kualang, Vietnam
Negotiate peacefully with Athor Peaceful resolution is only way to bring back George Athor Deng, and other independents, not violence as other are advocating on the internet. I had known Lt. General Athor since 1988 when I joined as SPLA/SPLM as 'Jech Amer' or Red Army. He is a nationalist, freedom fighter and a loyal to south Sudan cause ever since. Comrade George had joined NIF and various factions in Upper Nile Region in 1991-2005. The place where SPLA still active in those days are enclaves of Dinka Padang/Luac, Atar Dinka, Pawiny, Panauru, and many other Padang Dinka in Upper Nile. These sections of Dinka were surrounded by moronic forces of Shiluk and Nuer loyal SSIM, SPLA-U and who finally surrendered themselves to Beshir in 1997.
When Bor Dinka was attacked by a combination of NIF-Nuer affiliated militias, it was Athor that gave hand to Bor and still manned the whole enclave of Upper Nile Dinka to SPLA to the time of CPA. What made him to do the shameful act of attacking his former comrades can be comprehended through the lenses of democratic transformation whereby the SPLM PB hand picked good boys and denied others as bad boys- independent candidates.
At this movement, GOSS, Jonglei State and Pigi County can select some religious leaders or elders/peace makers to go where he is in that part of Upper Nile Region. People should negotiate through peaceful means. Marko Akot Dakbai, Aliab, Lakes State
Kiir has forgotten other veterans Dear Gen Athor, Congratulations for what you've done but it's too early for that mutiny to burst because the widow of John Garang has taken the SPLM party to be her personal property forgetting the fallen other heroes.
We are behind you for that initiative, it's not that all who are in the party are happy with Kiir nor Nyandeng. Kiir has forgotten other veterans who are quiet not realizing they are quiet near him.
Kiir will never learn from where he was and who are those behind him. The wife of late Desire Laurant Kabila Congo did take the country Congo into her hands the way Nyandeng is driving Salvatore Kiir in South Sudan.
Who's Rebecca to talk about South Sudan? Widows are still mourning their husbands but you're now after wealth. This is people's blood which will bring leprosy to your clan. Tozulum Nash, Kenya
No redivision in South again People should be very careful! Agitation is not good. Madam Rebecca John Garang De Mabior is a humble human being, people knew her very well. People should not bring their opinions on her for Alfred Lado Gore's problem as no one has exactly known what took place. Alfred Lado Gore has lost election more like other independent candidates. Alfred Lado Gore himself hasn't said he is going to remove John Garang from the grave in Juba or stop non-Bari people for land. These are wishes and thoughts of hateful individuals from Alfred Lado Gore's tribesmen in Bari. Also with "re-divisionist elements" especially for those who'd like to bring back decentralization policy of 1983 in the South in the GOSS. We do not want division in among ourselves again in the South like 1983.We need to live together in UNITY in the South for one purpose of interest. All citizens in the South can go to any one of ten states to stay on his or her decision without force at all. Chief Abiko, USA
Imposing unwanted commissioners not fair What you have stated are true; a governor has no powers to appoint the commissioner in his/ her state, if so then there is no need of electing the governors. They can be elected or appointed by the president in his capacity as president of the republic. The election of the commissioners must be done at the current stage if not done then what we are doing in the South is not related to what is so-called government. Second to that, this kind of imposing unwanted person on people is not fair, the choice of many people have to be fulfilled. Michael Malwal Mawein, South Sudan
Riek Machar/Angelina domination unacceptable Thanks to the people of Unity State for electing Taban Deng Gai, Dr Riek Machar should be shamed himself by allowing his wife to ran for position of governorship. Why does Machar want to be the vice president of the South and his wife the governor of the state, how does that sound? To me it is totally unacceptable beacuse you are not alone in Bentiu. Majok Aker Ayai, Rumbek
Would have voted for SPLM-DC I'm really sorry for what is happening in south Sudan. Is this the way we are going? If yes, there is no need for separation. Rebecca is not the choice of the people of Central Equatoria. How comes our president is being used as a tool by her to appoint Clement the winner in this election? Know that you have lost your popularity in this state& Unity state, because every one is now against your dictatorship government. Had we to know this before, we would have voted for SPLM DC. Mogga Moses, Juba
Commissioners appointed by governors Please be informed that the NEC is not responsible for conducting elections at the local government levels, it only conducts elections for the The president of the Sudan, The President of GoSS, Governors at the executive level and at the legislatures level being it members contesting for National Assembly, Southern Sudan Assembly and the State Assemblies. Please read the National Elections Act, 2009. The Commissioners shall be appointed by the Governor of the state, you should also read the Laws of Southern Sudan especially the Southern Sudan Local Government Act, 2009. Sabri Juma Hussein, Sudan
Bor should open new page I'm shocked by the one article that agrued Dr. Machar Should say sorry to Dinka Bor community. The 1991 coup of Dr. Machar didn't make any special damage to Bor community alone. What about those Nuer that lost their lives in that spilt but nobody has taken notice to rcord it? Doesn't mean that Nuer are dumb to tell Kirr to say sorry to Nuer community. I think Dinka want another war again between the tribes. Bor community can think instead of opening a new page and move on with life. Andrew Poth, Sudan
SPLM has legitimacy to govern For the oppressed South Sudanese, the desire to create a new democratic state where people have to elect their leaders to run their government of the people for the people and by the people for over two decades or more cannot be suppressed by the illegitimate SPLM government, which had undermined South Sudan constitution and the international law.
SPLM has consistently, since its formation, rejected the vast will of majority of people of South Sudan the right to vote and to be voted in their communities, the right of freedom of speech, the right of movement, the right for a fair treatment, and the right of self-determination, and has never, it must never, enjoy any moral political legitimacy of our entire oppressed people.
Legitimacy of any government is associated with authority to govern. The comprehensive peace agreement which the two partners- National Congress Party (NCP) and the Sudan’s People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) have abrogated has provided a legal framework that can recognize legal authority. If law has to have relevance, it must be evident that the SPLM regime in South Sudan lacks authority under international law. The only legitimate basis for the authority of any government is the consent of the people, however it is expressed. It follows this that the regime has no right in international law to speak in the name of South Sudan and no right to assure its own survival.
The struggle of South Sudanese for freedom and self-determinations in the land of our birth is the continuation of struggle waged by our ancestors against the plunder of our land by the early colonists, and against our exploitation as slaves by both British and Arabs invaders.
South Sudanese were conquered by force, and their continued subjugation by NCP and SPLM has been ensured by force. The apparatus of these governments is to use force in form of subjection to poverty, illiteracy, violence, intimidation, torture, imprisonment without trail, insecurity, exploitations, corruptions, murder, and forced occupation. To end this, no matter what SPLM ruling party does this time to South Sudanese, it will remained as always the illegitimate governing organization in South Sudan. It will remain an illegitimate regime because it has been charged with crime against humanity; it have deprived millions in South Sudan the right to vote and be voted, the right of liberty and property; it has perpetuated a system of gross tribal discrimination and inequality in the south; It has systemically incarcerated and tortured many people contrary to the rule of international law; worse of all SPLM is illegitimate because it waged and has massacred South Sudanese school children in Yambio during the last annual comprehensive peace agreement celebration. Lako Modi Tombe, Canada
Our leaders out of touch South Sudan must let true democracy speak to the world about their leadership choices. After all, that was why millions of lives of our people got lost for. The international community has stood with us up to now since when the point peace was established with their assistance and the groundwork for us to determine the political, economical and social path our people want to take was laid - CPA. It is incredible now to hear what what is taking place in South Sudan during the recent elections. The results of elections are delayed to give room for unfair play. This only spells the fear the political establishment in Juba as a result of isolating the masses out of political decisions made for them. It clearly says that the leadership in Juba has lost touch with the common man in the street, road or village in South Sudan. The fear is that what is going to be the next step the masses are going to take with this frustration? My fear is that that now the legitimate means of achieving justice in governance is denied by those in authority then we can expect anything far from tranquility. We should not rule out that those in Uniform that perpetuate injustice were non-uniformed street guys that can be replaced by them. We should not let things go out of hand where a brother fights a brother for ful Masir or Beledi and political bones from Jallaba. South Sudan stands to loose if we do so. We all have a vision of wanting to live in a peaceful land where a child can get a pencil and paper to learn, a common man can afford a needle to mend his garment, a village man can get chloroquine for malaria and a decent home to live in!. Bismark Bura, Australia
Angelina-Taban rivalry worrisome There are elements in the Unity State who are trying to return us to the dark days of war lordism in the modern of history of Western Nile during the splitting of SPLM/A in 1991 to 2005. I thought that the suffering of Unity State citizens ended in 2005 after the completion of CPA between north-south Sudan, but what is happening nowadays between Angelina Riek and Governor Taban Gai supporters is worrisome resembling another Matip- Riak- Gatdet-Taban and other warlords of 1997-2003 war that engulfed the entire Western Nuer clans by themselves, causing untold suffering and loss of properties between the formers militias affiliated groups or seven factions in the western Nuer alone. Angelina's supporters are spreading lies, cries and complaints since day one of election and now her supporters are tarnishing the image of State and Taban Deng on internet. Now, southerners are keeping their eyes on Unity State, and everybody, Taban, Angelina and rests of citizens will be judged on what is happening in our state. Gatkuoth Duop Nhial, Guit county, Unity State
Dr. Garang was a smart politician I hear some people are talking that new Sudan vision has gone with Dr. John Garang, as some of them say that John Garang was a gambler politician. Yes, I could agree with some points, but I can name it as smartness, John Garang was very smart politician not as some old aged politicians. Dr. John used to study general problems and opinions from the society ground which made him very successful leader during his days in struggle, the opposite of some short sighted politicians who see as calling for whole Sudan is inappropriate reason for fighting in south Sudan. Samuel Kur, Sudan
Angelina elected by people M. Deng Lang. Teny has no royal family in Bentiu. Mrs. Riak was elected by people in your place in Bentiu in Unity State in Nuerland alone democratically. It does matter whether her husband Dr. Riak Machar is a Deputy in SPLM and Vice President in GOSS. He is there to work for people. We just needed somebody to do the right thing for people! Not lip services. Chief Abiko, USA
We need Taban to step down immediately Although he is strong leader, this time he's not very honest. Taban Deng Gai, was not bad for the first time; in all his entire life. For example, when we were in Itang, Taban was very good leader who made lots of changes. Let me tell you this, one piece of stick fire can burn the whole forest. Today, Taban, has become a different person; due to his bad influence from outsiders. Instead of making Unity State a better place for the future of the Bentiu’s citizens, he made it worst forever in Southern Sudan. Anyone can ask himself why Mr. President is still silent while the situation is going bad. And why the independent candidates are the problem in other States while they are not a problem in his State? I believe he is behind this mess but as leader of the country we need his intervention to solve this problem immediately. Otherwise if he does not think twice he will lose his support from the People of Unity State and Taban himself as well. I think Mr. President and his friend Taban should respect the public choice and accept the election result, this should be the better way. We do not need to loose any person's life in Unity State or in all southern Sudan for the seek of leadership at this time. We all knew that leaders come and go. Lam Jok, In Canada
No Teng's royal family in Unity State Power sharing should be applied in Unity States for the common good of citizens of Unity State, both Nuer clans and other non-Nuer ethnics. Riek Machar is already the Deputy Chairman of SPLM and Vice president of GOSS, from Leer county and other prominent figures are from Leer clan of Nuers. So, Angelina Riek should not attempt to caused chaos because Pariang County voted overwhelmingly for Lt. General Taban. We are not building here a kingdom in the Unity State for Teny's royal family. Other Nuers and Dinka who have not been in GOSS, SPLM/A would like to have their representation in Unity State. M. Deng Lang, Unity State
Two mistakes in SPLM
history
I am afraid to express this, but it necessary to tell SPLM as my favorite
political party as well as for all Sudanese to learn la esson and avoid
making such terrible mistakes in the future.
1- Selection of candidate for gubernatorial and legislative position:
SPLM has messed things up as it divided the opinions of its supporters by just a little error which could have been overcome by exercising the doctrine and principles of democracy to respect the will of people in choosing its candidates, rather than just choosing the hand-picked people who don’t represent the majority neither the will of the public. Yes those people may have long struggle history in the bush fighting, but at same time those who have not been selected also have served and shown loyalty to the movement in this way or another.
Another thing SPLM should have considered is that the post is not military post, but it's a civil position. To make things even worse it went on to expel those candidates whoare determined to stand alongside with their people, which I suggest it was their right to do. A solution could have been reached if the SPLM had surrendered its decision and returned to democratic process in selecting the candidates before the time ran up.
Now supporters are divided and some are even fighting because of this terrible mistake undertaken by the party. SPLM should and must immediately act to reconcile those who have been expelled and officially apologize to the public because everything is in total mess and confusion otherwise it will cost the party a heavy price.
2- Withdrawal of presidential candidate:
Up-to-date reasons and causes behind withdrawal are still blindfolded and unclear to the public. Because what was said by Dr Riek is not what Yasser had said. Riek told the news that it was Arman’s request to withdraw, but he was quoted saying that he withdrew because of security situation in Darfur. So there was some sort of contradiction between the two and the party as whole because even Kiir had given different explanations somewhere. Nevertheless even if the decision was justifiable it wasn’t the right time to withdraw, as supporters everywhere held the party of misleading the people. Though it is a party of individuals not representing all Sudanese in the country and around the world, it happened, but not in wisdom and good judgment. In my opinion Arman should have remained and people go to the poll and see what happens. Who knows? Arman might have won the election as the results shows in all southern states that he is leading, despite of his withdrawal; anyway we will remain silent until SPLM reveals its plans for which it did all this. Awilo Garang Kon, Australia
Chad's Pres. Deby just a barking dog This is short message to all south Sudanese: what had been stated by Chadian president, please take it as a dog barking. No one has more right than you do for 2011 referendum, it is you who will determine your freedom and not Deby. William Mut, Australia
We'll make it in 2011 If South Sudan was flooded with water, we would not give up and say God let our souls rest in peace. We would learn how to live in water and for the first time in the whole world, we would discover another way of life. Someone once said, 'problems are there to make you strong and not make you scared.' In our heart we are south Sudanese; by nature we are, and by 2011 we make it known as South SUDANESE. Rapdit D. Mangar, south Sudan
Tough luck Who on earth is making change in Sudan when every individual is power hungry, filling their stomach by robbing the resources of the country? Who on earth can claim that he/she is the savior of Southern Sudan's corruption? David Geri, South Sudan
This is a Response to Both Gat' on 1991 breakaway and Raan Naath talking about Dr. Riek being a deliverer. To Gat'Bol: When will you people stop misquoting others because of envy? The 1991 conflict was caused by power greediness and not New Sudan Vision ideal. This was when Riek Machar and Lam Akol wanted to rule the South according their will but not of the people - if they could have succeeded by then; the South could be in Khartoum today according to their Fashoda agreement with Bashir. Which Naath called the present Referendum? Listen here, Raan Naath. I don't see Riek as a deliverer but let's wait and see. Referendum came in during Naivasha peace talks, it's not a Fashoda idea- get things right. There are no kids to fool. Makuei Tor, USA
New Sudan Vision of Dr John Garang de Mabior exists.
The manipulation of ideas about the New Sudan vision encourages many South Sudanese to misunderstand Dr Garang's Vision. I believe that New Sudan vision has no different meaning apart from the exact meaning of New and Sudan and it mission/vision. The mainstay of SPLM- Dr John Garang de Mabior and those dedicated SPLM members who examined the great Vision of SPLM ever since comprehended the meaning of New Sudan more better than those who just take the symbol and the glance of its characters. Because of misinterpretation, some people acclaimed it wrongly. I have no doubt that New Sudan vision is complex and there is no way everyone can clearly digest it very easily, perhaps when we will become mature in thinking and leadership.
I want to remind my friends GatCharwearbol and others who misquoted the vision of New Sudan. The vision is not dead, my dear. Dr Garang vision did not die, it's still alive dear friends. The mission has been accomplished by Dr Garang and that is why he said that it is your turn if you want to be a second class citizen in your own country, it is up to you. I think Dr's ability doubled ours because he means the separation of South for long under the mission/vision of New Sudan. Now are we not waiting the referendum? Indeed, the misrepresentation of ideas could be a big insult. And in fact, it is insulting to called New Sudan vision of Dr Garang as a dead one. Those individuals are currently insulting prominent supporters and South Sudanese as well. What persuaded all of you that the New Sudan was dead? Are we South Sudanese not following CPA that was signed under SPLM effort in Kenya? Yes, this peace accord was under the New Sudan vision that you guys are now witnessing at the moment.
There is no freedom without dedication and effort, no freedom without pride, and no freedom while taking side with the oppressors. The above characters described the manners of those who misunderstood Dr Garang Vision.
I thought that it's a lethal sentiment to describe the excellenct Vision that way while it is still operating. Blue Nile and Nuba Mountain will be under consultation next year whether they will be part of North or South. Is that not the intention of SPLM (New Sudan Vision)?
South Sudan will chose their interest in 2011 if allowed, is that not the vision of new Sudan?
The election has been done in both the North and the South, is that not the vision of New Sudan?
What are you, dear friends, talking about when you said that New Sudan has dead? Please, let's be intrepid and respect the heroes for their work done. Bol D. Bol USA
Dr. Machar has always been true nationalist. Dr. Riek Machar has always been a true nationalist in his actions to free the people of South Sudan. Some of his actions with good intention, however caused some sort of violence like what happened in 1991, but the end result is the current self-determination towards referendum we all long for to lead us to independence. So, championing self-determination even though violence followed as a result of late Garang preaching it as Nuer taking over power from Dinka, should not be called as a sin by Dr. Machar. Raan Naath, Juba
To SPLM: People have their rights Dear South Sudanese, know that politics must be treated politically. In political practices there are some theories that defines political maturity. But what is so apparent with our people in south Sudan, believe me they are not politicians. Instead, they are very good historians. While history is regarded a good material for building up ones political career, it is equally important to reciprocate the saying in politics that in politics "there is neither permanent friend nor permanent enemy". So, for this reason, today we may be friends, and tomorrow we are enemies. This element of truth is being lacked by most politicians in South Sudan. They do not want to remember that it was al Turabi who organized the coup for Al Bashir in 1989 when they were friends and who and where is Al Turabi today. So I want to tell those inexperienced politicians that, they should rest assured that we can use one boat to take us ashore, and if it is punchered the people on board should agree in unison to repair it. Failure to reach a consensus to repair, then one would be compelled to look for an alternative boat that can take him or her ashore the sea. So the purpose of this letter is to inform the SPLM die-hards that the people have their rights to determine their owned destiny by whatsoever means, whether through SPLM as a steering wheel or through other alternatives. We have had enough from the SPLM political gimmicks which, at the end missed the vision for which it was established. This means that today I may be a member of a political party and tomorrow I may not. So that means both of us will have the sense of belonging to a nation and nationalism, but how to administer the nation and national interests are what we can disagree on principally.
This is healthy for the national building because, new ideas can be derived from the opposition and can be utilized by the ruling party. Here I may not blaming it much on Southerners because we have not had stable political experiences since time immemorial. So most southerners view SPLM as the only party that can deliver and grant them what they want. It will then later discovered that the People's party will be history like those ones during the Colonial era.
Most African independent movements and anti colonial parties are no longer commanding popularities, the case which will be with the People's party. Therefore there will be a lot political party's emergence including some defectors from the SPLM. These are some of the truth in politics, not traditions. Ochan Nyero, Kenya
Dr. Riek Machar a changed man I believe and trust that we learn from our mistakes. Mr.Riek Machar is a humble and a changed man as far as we all know him.He is one of the most hard working member of the SPLM and a roving Ambassador in the nature of his work between the two Government of GONU AND GOSS.
Mr. Salva Kiir sees Mr.Machar as his right hand man because he delivers. Mr.Machar is better off because he sinned only once and not 70x7 that most of us can sin in a given day Since we can learn from our mistakes we should also be forgiven from our mistakes and that is how the world rotates and revolves around its axis. Dr.Machar should remain part and parcel of the next government of south Sudan in order to lead us to the CANAAN. Justin Chicago Opiny, Canada
Is Bona Malual a veteran? I have this question to ask, does going into exile qualify a person to be a veteran? People like Bona Malual Maduot should never call themselves or someone call them veterans because a veteran is a person who has been in war frontline for so many years and has also been instrumental for the freedom of his or her own state. People like Malual were hiding in London and betraying Southerners and today enjoying the dividends of CPA. People like him should not confuse the world on Sudan election as it has started well in South Sudan despite wrong perceptions that the elections will spark violence which is the bad wish from the enemy of peace.
Shut your mouth and join jalaba because you like being a slave more than liberty for your own land. Chris Marol, South Sudan
SPLA a threat to elections Mr. Bona Malual is right in this particular part of his complaint, the SPLA is a major threat to the fairness of the ongoing elections in many states here in Southern Sudan. For them democracy means voting in the SPLM. I want to tell them that the SPLM has been ruling since 2005 & the time is due now for us to judge through the polls if they deserve more time or not without being intimidated by anybody. P. Akoldid, Juba
Let the community choose I think this election is good, but there are people trying their best to do something for others. I think let the community choose whoever they want. Even if you force people today to vote for somebody, tomorrow they will still say something bad against whatsoever we do now will appear next morning. Let's hope for some good with this election Paul Okony Apok, Sudan
Appreciates efforts of Sudanese in election Despite lack of trust in the electoral body and obvious suspicion of rigging by the NCP and the SPLM as well, I appreciate the effort made by people of SUDAN by standing up in the morning of today against all odds to cast their votes in favor of their candidates. We hope that SUDAN is entering a crucial stage of democracy. Rigging and intimidation are part of politics in Africa and people falling prey to such situations should not cry loud everyday because this is why we have opposition to fight and highlight the problems to the observing parties. Alier Malual Dot, Kenya
Pagan is wrong My brother Jwathob Othwo. Do not get me wrong!Sorry. I am not from Dinka tribe as you are now putting it for me without finding my correct identification. Kirr is Kirr! Abiko is Abiko! I am from Otuho tribe from Eastern Bank in Eastern Equatoria State in Torit. I don't belong to any political party both in the South and in the north. "I am a layman!" I am neutral in political affairs of Sudan. I am not supporting anymore because there is no more fighting in the bush in the movement because the peace accord have been attained in 2005. For Pagan Amum, SPLM Secretary General problem in the party SPLM/SPLA, he is wrong! I am not supposed to regret at all at this point! Chief Abiko, USA
SPLM can't succeed as tribal party Reply to Peter & Chief Abiko The downfall of Kiir will be Kiir himself because he has surrounded himself with many Dinka thugs who are egocentric, power hungry and tribalistic. They are driven by the insane idea of the so-called “Born to rule” which's ingrained in their minds. Our Dinka brothers seem to think that SPLM is a Dinka movement instead of a national movement that includes all tribes of South Sudan. Being SPLM’s supporter does not mean one cannot disagree with the way the movement is handling its affairs. Much of the rhetorical hate against SG Pagan Amum has been carried out by President Kiir and his kinsmen like Chief Abiko and Peter Chol, calling SG Pagan Amum junior official. No decent leader and intelligent citizens could use vicious tribalism in a national movement. The SPLM cannot succeed as political party where other non-Dinka tribes are singled out for ridicule on basis of their tribes rather than characters. Jwothab Othwow, USA
Why Dr. Machar is a better leader In response to the question why I mentioned only Dr. Machar as a good leader in GOSS asked by M. James: As you may know that leaders are not appreciated on tribal basis, but rather on how they try their level best to accomplish the tasks. However, put in mind or be advised that when you are in school doing school assignment or project, not all your best supportive details you can put in your composition essay if an essay assignment length is limited by your professor. You are free to point out whoever you think performs the same role as Dr. Machar is doing in GOSS base on your convenient judgment. I see Dr. Machar roves back and forth a lot in order to get the things done more than every one at GOSS level. If you live in Juba as one of the GOSS ministers, I would encourage you to assist Dr. Machar in his push for the success of South when your regime's being re-elected to the office. Junior appropriate to SG Pagan Amum The objective of this piece of writing is to response to the comment made by Mr. Jwothab Othow, USA, with title "SPLM Divided." Dear brother Othow, I am here not to push you off the cliff but to rectify something that you had placed incorrectly. I think you have misinterpreted the term used by first Vice-President of Republic of Sudan and President of South Sudan, Mr. Kiir Mayardit. The word “Junior” has a lot of meanings that are attached to it, When I read your commentary it seem that you have pick a negative portion of the word “Junior” and addressed it to the media. Here are words that imply 'Junior:' low-ranking, subordinate, minor, inferior, low-grade, and less important.
For your information, when Mr. Mayardit referred to SG Mr. Pagan Amun as Junior he was not implying negative side of word as you thought, but was he's comparing his position to that of Mr. Amun. If you don’t know, Mr. Amun is of low-ranking to Mr. Mayardit. By that I meant to tell you that he is Mr. Mayardit’s subordinate. Although Mr. Amun is SG still he is under Mayardit’s supervision and Mr. Mayardit was right to call him junior because Mayardit is the chairperson to so speak. I do not see any disrespect in that sense, even Mr. Amun can agree with me in this case.
Coming to their ranking position back in SPLA, Mr. Amun was junior to Mr. Mayardit. They have never been that close by any means. Therefore, I don’t know why calling Mr. Amun Junior is a big deal as you have addressed in your commentary. I am here not to defend any one, but to tell everyone on this site that whenever we see a spoon, let’s call it a spoon and not a spade. I mean it is very creditable to read in-between the lines and get the implication of word correctly before we voice our remarks to the media. I hope the rest of colleagues including Mr. Othow will agree with me on this remark. If there is anything that I have misplaced, please speak it out. Thank you in advance, and let’s be wise for the best in the upcoming elections. My God Bless Sudan as whole. Reuben Panchol, USA
Election and informed voting Some Southern Sudanese who have little or no understanding of political issues and the complexity of decision making, have taken to the internet to express that Dr. Lam Akol is a traitor. Some even accused him of being an agent of the NCP and resisting separation or self-government. Of course it is very clear and evidence that many of these accusers have no understanding of democracy. These are people who will vote a person into power not based on his ability to reason but on tribal basis.
I encourage my fellow Southern Sudanese to research and inform themselves about Southern Sudan’s issues and how well the Politicians are placed to respond to the immense challenges of today. Corrupt acts that continue to take away money from substantial development activities for our people, tribal divide and most importantly insecurity (the threat of death and the likes) for people who may not agree with the ruling government cannot be allowed to continue if Southern Sudan is going to survive. Come on fellow Sudanese, wake up to democracy and be well informed before casting your vote this April. Martin Modal, USA
You touched my heart Dear Michael Deng, in fact, what you really wrote touched my inner heart to its bottom; so you stated every issue in your article which's what I had support for it of course, my friend. Actually you did touch all the corners of the weakness of the SPLM since their nomination for their candidacy who could willingly contest against Al Bashir. Monyluak Kur, USA
South Sudan Tribal Politics It is a misfortune to read articles contributed by tribal politicians in southern Sudan, especially those directed by emotional feelings. We tend to blame governments when we can’t control our tongues and fingers on the Internet. Our motives have always been destructive, invective, disintegrative, etc instead of being educative or persuasive to do the right thing to build our infant nation “South Sudan.”. Many who read these articles may feel irritated or demoralized to see a nation that has suffered for generations to indulge itself in unproductive campaign.
There are many things which need to be corrected when we put our Nation first, and above our personal desires. The Ministries you talked of are not securely built; as they are all confined together like stores in a Mall. Should anything happen (God forbid) nothing will remain! Many countries in Middle East, Europe and America have their Ministries scattered to various provinces or states due to several reasons. This could answer some of the grievances you expressed in terms of land, representation etc. apart from security, services and development those Ministries would provide national wide. It would be good idea if the GoSS government could consider relocation of some ministries mainly for security and service deliverance. Charles Kenyi, Canada
