Is it a curse on South Sudan or a lack of good leadership?BY: Chier Akueny Anyithiec, UGANDA
JAN. 03/2012, SSN; Dear Editor, allow me to elucidate that the punishments based on whole Sudan, where South Sudan came out from as a nation after a serious civil war that took 22 years have never finished because there are lots of situations which show all these facts; first of all, South Sudan is immensely struck by the lack of good leadership that's is accountable to the forcefully muted citizens by President Mayardit’s led administration.
However, at this point, I would fail to acknowledge if it is the weakness of leadership or is it because South Sudan was created unlucky?
Initially and at the blink of the independence of South Sudan on July 2011, which is 7 months old, the government of South Sudan has never ever tried to come with directives and principles of good leadership expected of it.We always hear from President Kiir about zero tolerance on corruption. But this is not the only way and principle of governing the country because, sometimes corruption could be not existence but also lack of aims and directives may fail the progresses of the nation as well.
The world knew very well the problems to be faced if South Sudan could be given its own autonomy or independence, exactly; that was why the international community gave six years interim period to people of Sudan according to CPA.After which they may decide to either maintain the whole Sudan or divide the country into two. Actually, the South Sudan came out of old Sudan as a Sovereign country. This state named South Sudan according to direction is immensely endowed with lots of natural resources such as oil, gold, iron, Uranium, Arable land; and the list continues.
This nation could have been among the richest and strongest countries in Africa as well as the whole world but the leadership failed the nation into the deepest gorge. Some few people in leadership may take the citizenry stand as a matter of fallacies or false aggression but it has been a matter of persistent lack of happiness in citizens of South Sudan as well.
The new nation got independence with 85% of oil reserve which was owned by the whole Sudan but lack of aims failed the new nation to harness the virgin land with its resources of the nation. Why I say so? We have been expecting to be free and developing in our new nation but our leadership style led to full confusion and lack of aims in the nation; whereby you can find great greediness of leadership, which led to too many rebel factions across the South Sudanese regions.
Why? Because the government has no aims and directives; if it has, it could have committed itself to measures of controlling these vicious actions against civilians. I hope nobody needs war again in South Sudan even though some leaders from the SPLM/A are cadres running away because they have never been involved in rampant corrupt society in Juba whereby you find every comrade driving unbelievable GXR, embezzling public funds to foreign banks leaving citizens with no choices but to involve themselves in various acts of crimes such as these raging rebellions in the region.
As a result, the gap between riches and poor increased greatly as ''destitute are begging for alms at a public park to buy food from a nearby food stand while the riches are planning to buy airplanes for their young children''.
Now, the suffering of the civilians increases more with more rebellions because those who are being recruited to fight corrupt government of Juba as they (rebels) say are mere innocent citizens who want easy lives in their new Republic; however the government of South Sudan fail the state in many ways:
1. Khartoum based government is still threatening the people of South Sudan along the borderline with ceaseless bombing on civilians, whilst the government of South Sudan leaders throng themselves wrestling over oil’s monies in Juba with no aim of protecting the civilians.
How long will we be relying on International community for our security purposes in the country and whom do we think will come and fight for our security in South Sudan? How many people have died in post independence attacks by the Khartoum regime military offensive? These questions go to President Mayardit, since he is always becoming a crying baby for help from International community. Mind you that International community is there for every country and they should help you when you are trying for yourself.
2. Insecurity in South Sudan is aggravated by lack of defined military defense and poor ministry of defense as a whole because all those crimes happening along the border accrue from defense ministry defaults. This is indicated by the occupation of Dinka land of Abyei, Ruweng land of Heglig, Jau of Unity state and others. But what are measures taken by this ministry? I think none at all!
3. Lack of measures and awareness lead to serious continuous offensives attacks among the tribes in South Sudan, which shows that a leader takes office aiming at how to benefit himself only; for the case of Jonglei state, however the governor, Kuol Manyang Juuk knows very well that tribes always attack one another and this has been happening in his presence as a governor, but he did not come up initially with measures to stop these criminal acts. What is he a leader for? Is he a leader for whom? And is he a leader for what reason?
4. Rude governance becomes a major cause of unrest in South Sudan whereby the citizens lack voices forwards in their own country, but we don’t whether this kind of leadership may help us forward because everything has got its own antidote and this is what people want to try but the commence it in a wrong way. We must assure these factions that people of South Sudan are tired of fighting and so, we need easy lives this time round.
Solutions to these problems;
1. The poor governance and rampant corrupt society in Juba must be told to adjust and correct their styles of leadership so that citizens are given upper hand in development.
2. Ministry of defense should adjust and outline the principle of defense otherwise the new country is to the wane because there is no g citizens who have been groaning in pains during the 22 years of civil war are still dying of foreign attacks when we have the armies and enough resources to equip the nationals armies as well.
3. Government of South Sudan should allow the citizens of South Sudan to be participating in their economical, social and political development in the country and it is our right to do so.
4. The population of South Sudan firstly support Mayardit leadership since is a one of founders of the SPLM/A led revolution and people expected him to be knowing the roots cause of challenges facing the citizens of the nation. So, President Mayardit should try the way forwards to restore the fading interest of the people of South Sudan.
Finally, people of South Sudan also are really shocked by the instance kind of leadership prevailing across South Sudanese State from West to East and from North to South and root cause is based in Juba; I say so because if a person is an aimless father, then all the children borne venerate the same root of weakness and they follow it. Herein, there is no doubt that South Sudan will descend into serious Somali style of lives while Khartoum Army forces are finishing civilians inside South Sudan, we did not expect these appalling conditions during the joyous celebration which was enjoyed by the world but our aimless leadership caused them.
