Is Referendum a test for Southerners and Abyei?

BY: Bol Deng Bol, USA

SEPT 19/2010, SSN; The Referendum next year is a test for South and Abyei whether they want the Khartoum rule or not. The world is watching us as to how we are going to pour away our well cooked food that was handed to us on a golden plate.

The World and the entire Africans will laugh loudly when we vote for unity because they know the history of Sudan respectively. Everyone across the globe is monitoring Sudan news every single day. This is because they want to see how South Sudanese are going to use this chance effectively. In fact, the world wants and is eager to see and hear the outcome of the referendum in 2011.

We should deserve what we have been fighting for in this referendum. Dear Brothers and sisters, let's make this a final war against Khartoum. Secession must be the utmost, that must be true. This will not stun anyone here, but the referendum that we are yearning for in a few months to come will be a kick-off exercise.

I hope this referendum will be like the way our generation offered their lives for the betterment of our country in 1983 against the Khartoum regimes. The South Sudanese hopefully will run to the referendum stations to shake off that dusty stain on their shoulders, and make their vote a final war. As we can see, the referendum of self independence for Southerners will test the capability of southerners whether they feel bitter about the Khartoum rule or not.

SPLM and NCP signed CPA in Kenya according to the international communities and the East African leaders because the war in Sudan is endless. I salute our late hero Dr John Garang de Mabior for his courage and firm stand for his people. This must be the similar stand that we should take in this exercise and not worry about those Northerners and some opportunistic Southerners who're always against the development in the country.

Obviously, the NCP wants to manipulate the CPA like the way they previously dishonored the Addis accord. But they failed to acknowledge the sophistication of Southerners at this modern history. The Khartoum government should know very well that since the SPLM took up arms in 1983, this was clear that the South has already identified their problem, and they encountered a possible solution for it. Certainly, we have known the problem better in 1983 and because of that, we have taken the path of no return against the Arab North.

The people of the South and  the other marginalized Sudanese are conscious about the staggering of the North leaders because they were thinking of CPA like the Addis Ababa agreement and many other agreements, but this is a contemporary time. SPLM leadership has done a remarkable job during the implementation of CPA even though border demarcation is still an irritating issue now.

I think there is nothing that could block us to vote for separation. We have the privilege to secede as welcome in the CPA. I believe that our leaders accomplished their assignments because they vigorously applied their strong negotiation skills. Seriously, I feel relief and glad because we identified the root cause of the problem in Sudan.

This is a wake up call for Khartoum government. They should understand that CPA guaranteed South Sudanese and Abyei the referenda, Nuba Mountain and Blue Nile for popular consultation. There should be no way NCP would interfere with our choice, otherwise this is a grave decision. Why does NCP/Khartoum leaders worry much for the choice of these marginalized people? Is Bashier government now deploring themselves, why and when? This is imaginable for Khartoum to complain at the time when the South and the others made their mind for development instead of destruction that had affected the country for decades. NCP regime is in trouble, they must let the South choose their favorable side without their interference.

The upcoming referendum will help the world to know how we south Sudanese endure the brutal administration of Khartoum government.

Dear South Sudanese and Abyei, we have no hard multiple choice that need to worry us, our option was not meant to be difficult, it’s just like yes or no easy exam. The south’s populations are asked whether they like Omer El Bashier with his government or not? If we like the Arab North who had the intention to undermine the south through their Islamic laws, then we will vote for unity, but I doubt. If those weak hearted attempt gimmick unity, then we have to make sure that we had no place in history till the end of the world because that ugly action will take us to square one because we cannot afford their rule anymore.

Indeed, separation is what we need so that we enjoy the fruitfulness of being a true citizen in our own country. The dirty politics that the Arab used against the South must be erased at this critical time because it deprived our development. I always said that bribes are lethal, so those weak hearted Southerners must stop and refrain from that kind of illusion. If we are serious, then what essence other than the sound of gun Southerners acquired in this country? I and almost every southerner know only wars, while we have been disconnected from education, infrastructure, politics, and economics.

Let's vote for separation instead of looking backward for unity and surely we will stop their ill-intention forever. We Southerners are eager for economics, political, and social development after 2011. SPLM/A must make this referendum possible by all means. If NCP interferes with referendum for self-independence, then the Unilateral declaration must be the second option and we are ready for that risk, but let us stop this problem by voting 100% for secession.
