Equatoria: Wake up & take lead to defend South Sudan posterity

BY: WANI TOMBE, South Sudan, FEB/28/2014, SSN;

There comes a time, in men’s lives, to defend the present, and safeguard the future, for posterity, with their precious blood and lives.

When the very survival of the self, is fatally threatened by intentions and conducts of other human persons, notwithstanding, whether the said threat comes from a blood brother, a life-long friend, or a fellow citizen.

Then, it becomes an obligation to suspend those relationships, saturated in positive rapport and amity, and then, activate intentions and conducts, which are meant to preserve the self, so that, this self can preserve other vulnerable lives and selves, which look up to this threatened self, for positive protection and well-being.

A dead father, or a dead elder brother, or/and a dead uncle, all of these dead bodies cannot safeguard the positive present and future; for living dependents and future posterity.

A father, or an elder brother, or/and an uncle; who has been rendered ineffective, due to cumulative disabling conditions, whether these conditions are political, economic, financial, security and military conditions; cannot also safeguard the presents and futures of living dependents and posterities.

When a living father, or a living elder brother, or/and a living uncle, have allowed the absolute destruction and usurpation of comprehensive infrastructures and super-structures, upon which, current vulnerable dependents survive; and future posterities to survive on, through political inaction, legal inaction, civil inaction, and martial inaction, then, the presence and history, shall not forgive these living relatives.

Also, the current living dependents and future posterities, shall not also forgive them.

When living fathers, or living elder brothers or/and living uncles; have the brains, the muscles, the wills, the reasons, and the wisdom, then, they must singularly and collectively take action, to prevent the comprehensive destruction of the said structures; for the sake of those others; whom, they brought into this world, as their dependents, and those who shall come into this world, because of their human reproductive roles.

No men, ever born of Adam and Eve, are cowards. Men are men, and they shall always die as men, in the way that men die; when defending comprehensive interests of their loves ones, and their dependents.

Men cannot unscrupulously sacrifice their loved ones for squandered sovereignty. National sovereignty is the sum total of units of sovereignties, that all of us carry as human persons, and citizens of the Republic of South Sudan.

Therefore, no men shall sit on the fence; while other men are dying defending these said units of individual sovereignties, in order to protect, the sum total of national sovereignty.

Is it not time to defend the present; in order to safeguard the futures of posterities?

The political, social, cultural, tribal, ethnic, security, economic, financial, technological, psychological, military and religious consequences of the last nearly nine (9) years; of gullible reliance; on the abstract social contract, within governance parlance, in South Sudan, have taught all of us lessons we shall forget to our own detriments.

These nine (9) years have also proven to us, the evidences we shall ignore to our collective perils.

These last nine (9) years have also pointed out to us, all relevant milestones and signposts, leading to our collective dark futures.

Therefore, is it not time to defend the present in order to safeguard our collective futures?

The Republic of South Sudan had missed out dangerously to our collective contributions and the result is what we are now harvesting.

We have lost; and continue to waste precious human lives of our women, children and men.

It is now clear that the political and military situations on the ground in South Sudan need a third voice, and a third point of view.

Not a third voice or point of view that emanates from the same one body, which divided itself into three parts, like an amoeba.

It has been a mistake, from 2005, to surrender the political and military fiduciary duties of South Sudan into the hands of others, who appear not to have the comprehensive interests of all the peoples of South Sudan, in their political and military hearts.

Securing the sovereignty of South Sudan, does not mean that, others have the free for all licenses, for the total destruction of South Sudan.

There is a need for a third voice and a third point of view which speaks for all the peoples of South Sudan.

It appears that, when a reasonable peacemaker comes in to stop two men, armed with iron rods, from battering themselves to death, he must come in with an iron rod of his own.

It is time to pick up the torch of reason in Greater Equatoria and show the way forward for the peoples of South Sudan.

South Sudan cannot function efficaciously without the all reasonable historical role of Greater Equatoria.

No one is claiming any clairvoyance powers but historical evidentiary variables are there to sober our angry reactions to this suggestion.

The women, youth and men of Greater Equatoria, with positive collaboration of those reasonable others– in Upper Nile and Bahr El Ghazal– must all come together, so that, together, we can stop the extant carnage and establish an interim government which is for the peoples of South Sudan.

No tribal police, no tribal armies, no tribal military intelligence organisations, and no other tribal security organisations; and no usage of comprehensive resources of South Sudan for group and individual interests.

We must come together for the establishment of community police in Greater Equatoria, in Upper Nile and Bahr El Ghazal, manned by sons and daughters of these regions.

This shall do away with disappearances and other unlawful conducts against our peoples.

We must come together to stop death squads in Juba, Malakal and Wau. We must develop the voice of reason sustained by the will and power to defend this voice of reason.

We do not want foreign soldiers in our land. We do not want foreign soldiers crossing our lands to kill our brothers all over South Sudan.

We are mature and adult peoples; who can solve our internal problems without foreign soldiers.

We do not want to hand over South Sudan to posterity in such a fractured fashion; disintegrated into hostile tribes and groups.

YOU THE WOMEN, MEN, AND YOUTH OF EQUATORIA, WAKE UP AND TAKE THE LEAD; IN SECURING A PEACEFUL GREATER EQUATORIA; AND A GREATER EQUATORIA WHICH IS A TEMPLATE FOR GENERAL PEACEFUL AND DEMOCRATIC SOUTH SUDAN.

    Dear Mr. Wani Tombe,

    That is a great patriotic call. People of greater Equatoria should learn from the following quote from a great man in the past.

    “First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out–
    because I was not a communist;
    Then they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out–
    because I was not a socialist;
    Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out–
    because I was not a trade unionist;
    Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out–
    because I was not a Jew;
    Then they came for me–
    and there was no one left to speak out for me,” by Martin Niemoller.

  2. Nikalongo says:

    Wani Tombe,
    I can understand that u are being more Equatorian from ur name than any Equatorian can ever be. That apart Tombe l’o Lako calls to Equatoria to join savages fighting their war of extinction will fail. That war is like a game of soccer. The kick off started in the presidential barrack in Juba and is logically continuing where the matches enjoy considerable support. Tombe all I want to say is, Dinka kill Nuer and Nuer kill Dinka. They are all bloodthirsty hooligans who have no respect for the sanctity of human life and values. If their leaders were wiser, they would stop the mutual killings and sue for peace. But because it is a match, they want a winner to emerge: meaning more Dinka and Nuer lives to be sacrificed. Completely hopeless. The rest of South Sudan in general and Equatoria in particular is not going to be part of the struggle to eliminate the Dinka or the Nuer from the surface of South Sudan regardless of whether that call comes from you Tombe, Alfred or Adwok. Calls to mobilisation by Governors in Equatoria is a defensive one. It will be naïve to imagine that Equatoria will condone wanton destruction of life and property within her borders. Those doubting do not have to look further than events in Yei and Mundri where defecting soldiers wanting to cause chaos were advised to take their trade to some place outside Equatoria.

    Tombe, UPDF were called in not to protect Kiir but to keep that war away from Equatoria. The national army has a very insignificant presence of Equatorians, barely enough to defend her interest. Coincidentally, Equatorians are limited to SPLA unit commanded by James Mai. Equatoria has no presence in Kiir’s Dinka SPLA nor Riak’s Nuer SPLA. Those calling for the withdrawal of the UPDF feel robbed of advantage to move on Juba. Sorry for them. But the fact is that, UPDF is seen in Equatoria as saviours and not invaders. They are cousins from across the borders and will stay put until such a time when Equatoria will be in position to defend her borders from marauding gangs of militia army from Gogrial, Aweil, Bor, Akobo, Nasir and the like who are armed and dangerous for the stability and tranquillity in Juba and the surrounding towns and settlements.

    Tombe, the only people who can stop that war are those actively involved in it. The war is not about South Sudan. It is about the Dinka, the Nuer and their supporters in between. Others not actively involved can only act as mediators. Talks about release of detainees and withdrawal of the UPDF is all nonsense. Kiir should release his prisoners because they are innocent. Keeping them jailed is damaging for his image. Does he know that? At the same time, Riak must stop putting the lives of many Nuer youths on the line because it will never win him support outside the Nuer heartland. The best way of removing Kiir is a political one and through the ballot box. He (Riak) should rather concentrate on the political issues than the military path he is being illadvised to embarked on. Those detained are not war mongers and his supporters. Riak must refrain from talking on behalf of the detainee. They (detainee) can take care of themselves or be taken care of differently. Conditioning talks on them gives Kiir reasons to keeping them detained.

    • Pan says:

      Very well articulated, Nikalongo! You can read the measure of wo/man by the savagery s/he excuses.

    • General South says:

      Nikalongo,

      Do not think that sons and daughters Equatoria will be convince that UPDF are in South Sudan for geater Equatoria , you tell this lias to those who have not done to class room.

  3. Ww says:

    Mr. Nikalongo,

    Your arguments are sensible. Many Dinkas would have voted against Kiir in a ballot box. It is terrible that we took our country back to zero in the name of toppling Mr.Kiir which could have been done in a peaceful manner. Contrary to the believe of many none Dinkas, Dinka are angry with Kiir but see that these can be done in a peaceful way.
    A rebel group only compose of one tribe claims to be fighting for a democracy; this is lunatic. I believe 63 tribes plus a good percentage of fed up Dinka could have disposed Mr Kiir in 2015. Riek machar believes that war is easy then politics because you know who you are shooting at but politics is not. I’m surprise to see that even those individuals who were receiving so much from this country have rebelled against it. If this rebellion is not stupidity of Riek machar and the arrogance of nuer as a tribe I’m afraid I don’t know what it is.

  4. Alier Gai says:

    Tombe,
    I don’t get it. You mean fighting kiir or macher, the greater equatoria region? And whom are you liberating yourself from?

  5. Kenneth says:

    Wani
    you have said it all, equatorians should not be used to protect dinka, they have hired many Ugandan to protect them, but how weakhearted are equatoria generals in the army if we have one! He should recall all equatoria men in uniform and also form a neutral equatoria army, as there is no longer any national army, this act alone, if it happens will solve this rebellion as soon as possible, using a government to fight a proxy tribal war is making the dinkas so obstinate thinking that they are wise and won the support of 63 tribes, so fallacious.

  6. Elijah Samuel says:

    Lako,
    Yours was very the heart,eloquent and patriotic! Unfortunately, The doomed nation will not get it any wonder we are where we are?
    The day the Equatorians wake is when the end bigins! The Dinka Government must not fight this tribal war they initiated through the State power.The equatorian are manhandled by the Kiir government. Kiir government committed genocide and violated our national sovernity by inviting mercenaries in our country, as Such, he is the enemy of the people who must be fought and removed, if he insist on the path of destructions of lives and properties.
    How can we as a nation sit down while, a criminal government uses our wealth and our children to carry out eliminatoion campaign of one tribe?

  7. Kidepo says:

    Tombe-

    My bullets are all reserved for dinkas only because the dinka government and community have fought all communities in the RSS and it is our national duty to deter them away from encroaching more to our strategic borders.

  8. Taban Mawa says:

    We the People of Greater Equatoria especially the the young ones needs to wake up to the reality that our existing leaders are not worthy relying upon to deliver us the peace or free society we all want. We, the young people are the Joshua of out time.

    Look every where in Equatoria for strong leader who can face the current ROSS leadership with head up. Our own son, the current VP Wani Igga is a failure so is Gov. Lobong. These two folks have surrendered long time to the Kiir dynasty. They are fulflining his wish not that of the people who elected them into office. I used to held high hope for Gov. Konga but that seems to be fading fast because of his stance on some serious issue facing the capital Juba. Perhaps the only hope I have left is on Gov Bakasoro who in many ways has demonstrated his ability to act in the best interest of his electorates. He Bakaoro oftens defend what belongs to his State and I applaude him for that. Another person is Issac Momur. Despite the government intention to silence him in many occasions, I still believe in his vision for a more United and properous South Sudan and more importantly where Equatorians will play a significant role. Another son we have but have been silence by Kiir is Martin Kenyi. He has been in and out of jail for the last 8 years because of his ability to stand up and face the puppets without fear. They fear him because they know he appeals to both the young and old and have the agenda to make Equatoria a strong region where good governance, corruption free and individuals rights and freedom will be respected

    The Ministeral meeting between Equatorian Ministers has been one of the good things am proud of. However this meetings seems to not yield proper outcome instead has become a place for the Ministers to claim allowences. This forum I suppose is a good avenue to discuss our issues and to put forward a long term agenda towards creating security and building proper infrastructures that will help shape the developments we need in Equatoria. If there is anything Equatorians are better at, ‘We are doers of things and innovators’. Our leaders should develop policies that will help support the aspirations and needs of the people. We are better people and we must continue to show we’re still the Equatoria that was not just followers of other people. However this cannot happen if our leaders continue to be puppets to the National government rather than focusing on States issues central to the needs of their people.

    Now lets face it. Many Greater Equatorians unfortunately still believes coup took place o the 15 Dec 2013 despite the numerious evidence clearly shows this crisis was a planned action to silence those opposed to Kiir adminstration. Those lives lost are not only a lost to their families but a lost to our young nation.

    Listening to VP Wani Igga and the Governors of Greater Equatorians talk about mobilising we the young people to go fight a war of choice sickens me. Those who planned and excuted the war should finish it because they don’t believe in peace. For any young person from Equatoria to join the army for the purpose of fighting fellow country men will not only show that we Equatorians are puppets of Kiir but are against the will of the majority longing for peace and secure country. I know our Governors will continue to tell us to join the fight but we must resist this call at all cost.

    What our Governors should be telling us is to be prepared to defend our region if it comes to worst. We should not allow another war to destroy the little we have built over the last 8 years in our region. Whoever comes to ourshore with good will and intention of leading a Nation united not based on tribalism should get our tick of approval.

    • Mohd Adam says:

      Wow Taban Mawa, your conclusion is 100% wrong. The three governors, called upon your people at home to enroll for military drills so as to be able to defend their land from marauding Nuer youth known as the white army. The youth that has no agenda, but only destruction. It is up to Equatorians especially those here at home, not those of you in the comfort of the west to stand up as called upon by their governors. Taban Mawa, if anything happens here in Juba today, Equatorians is the grass, get this into your mind. Many people inside Juba possessing guns in their homes are none Equatorians. This makes your people vulnerable in anytime the hell brakes loose. What the three governors are trying to salvage is an ideal of self defence, don’t take it as a call to war for the benefit of the regime. You are 101% wrong. Pray that the central government will give a node for your militia armament. It is critical that this senseless war comes to conclusion. Equatorians must heed to the call of their governors, or they wait for their own peril when the white army crosses Juba Torit bridge. The none Equatorians inside Juba, Nimule, Yei and the other cities in Equatoria, are well armed. The ball is at your court, you the people of the greater Equatoria. The only way out is, praying for peace if you are not to the task of defending your territories. Do not blame it on Kiir, it is Riek, who has driven us, where we are now!

  9. Mohd Adam says:

    Nikalongo has said it all. UPDF are here to stay. It’s presence helped, saved lives and paved way for possible mess evacuations of foreigners, including Americans. Liberated my cousins, the poor Dinka Bor from merciless Riek’s white army. The UPDF, are brothers, many of them took part in liberating us from Khartoum in our long and bitter fight for freedom. Many of us who know what it is in the SPLA, are so glad that the UPDF is here, without which, would have made things different from what it is now. Calling for their withdrawal now is like putting my cousins in Bor into a mental disorder facility, more nightmare for them. Solution to the current mess is for Riek to leave the white army take care of their cows, Riek comes to Juba and organize his own political party, call it anything. Comes 2015 or 2020, he contests national presidential elections. There is no short cuts in politics. It took our African icon, Madiba RIP, more than 27 years to achieve the vision of majority South Africans. Unlike Riek, whose objective is to install Nuer pride and bring Ngundeng prophesies to being, Equatoria, has nothing to offer, except to be aggressive for self defence in the looming eventuality. South Sudan’s great enemy is South Sudan itself. UPDF has indeed, taken away from all of us, the yoke of “I liberated you”.. Next time we shall all say, UPDF liberated us from near miss of exterminating ourselves. Long live the UPDF!

    Please post my below article. Mind you this is my third article that you have not published.

    SHOULD EQUATORIA STATES CONTINUE TO BE PART OF SOUTH SUDAN OR…………..

    Given the situation that befalls our country from 15th December 2013 up to now and is still ongoing coupled with deadlocks in Addis Ababa peace initiatives to bring a lasting solution to our country, both leaders to the conflict seemingly not willing to give up or rather call it a quit.

    On the other hand the proposed interim Government suggested by some humanitarian organizations, International community, IGAD and UN has landed to zero as the ruling President Salva Kiir is not willing to give up to the interim Government that should not be led by him-Kiir nor Dr Riek.

    This naive war some of us called power struggle from Juba on December, 15, 2013, has mainly affected all the Upper Nile states as well as many civilians and will eventually affect the whole nation at large in the nearest months if the war continues of which Equatoria may not be an exceptional. This meaningless war will not gain the three Equatoria States any positive results but instead Equatoria will lost his sons which are on forefront fighting the rebels on behave of the Government like during the civil war strive from 1955 to 2005 something the extremist never recognized the contributions from Equatoria. In this war Equatoria lands like Nimule and other parts of Equatoria will continue to be occupied by force in the name of IDPs of which the Government protecting the land occupants by arming them to teeth to take over Equatoria

    This is the right time the people of Equatorians should think-tank strategically of whether the 3 Equatoria States should continue to be part of South Sudan that is under dinka dominance or rather it is very wise for the 3 states to join Uganda or Kenya after all these two countries of Uganda and Kenya culturally are peaceful communities like Equatorians and have lot in common. In other words it is also high time for Equatoria to beat loud drums of federalism now or rather co-federation now not tomorrow. Meaning Equatoria has chance to secede as an independent peaceful country, join Uganda or Kenya, be a co-federation or federation within the RSS
