Bloodshed in South: Who's to blame?

BY: Moses Dang Gatluak, CANADA

JUNE 5/2010, SSN; Who should be blamed for the cause of another bloodshed in south? The conflict at this juncture that's claiming many innocent lives occurred due to having wrong advice to the presidential office. It was not expected by the individuals who gave wrong influences with no extended vision to anticipate what the counter reaction would be if losers are announced winners.

Also, the Election commission chairperson, Mr. Abel Alair, added up his plan to bring up the war among southerners as a means to derail south independence as a delaying tactic.

It is an undeniable fact for him (Uncle Abel) that he planned it purposely to create the way southerners must baffle and keep away from their plan to prepare for referendum. If that was not it, he should have compile better electoral rules.

However, GOSS leaders did not open their eyes to see what was behind all those interests.  If losers were not announced winners, there wouldn't be lost of lives or unexpected war within a few months toward referendum.

In the first place, independent candidates were right as an information released from the presidential office was not to nominate people randomly to run for governorship in all states. The surprised plan to nominate individuals came after those called today independent candidates declared or began their primary campaign in which they have popularity in their states could run till voters decided to chose their governors.

Regardless all that, voters were not panicked to pick their choices, nevertheless, president Kiir insisted to impose his favorable people through the door of no return which today culminated with two SPLA military camps. Who should be counted wrong in that judgment?

In fact, this current war is not a war without cause, for any south citizens who have participated his/her time in the liberation can claim his/her rights if humiliated by the same colleagues who have been in an enemy line together in the same struggle.

What I think other southerners should profess from those have been disappointed with election result is compromise for none of us need to see another internal liberation caused by self-interests. On the other hand, this is an act of president to equalize veterans instead to pick some and ignore the rest as many whined their rights denied by the president.

In contrast, many southerners claim negatively that George Athor had lost the election which is baseless and at the same time can not even help to solve the problem since it should be a violation of Athor's rights.

It was obvious to many southerners that most independent candidates won including Athor, but their rights were contravened just because they did not drop their independent candidacy as the office of the president stipulated. Plus, there was rigging that was carried out through all states. Which indicated Athor's action is against the whole system.

Those challenges can't make him calm instead they will increase his anger and the anger of others victims of election, who didn't want to raise their concerns about what happened and avoided taking part in the protest as Athor did.

At this critical moment, writers and readers need to be sincere to tell the truth of the undemocratic election that took place and condemn the continuous tyrannical regime and end corruption.

As the matter of fact, the time is not right for war or to take action against anything that could cause war as Athor has done. He can wait like others who have forgotten that injustice for the sake of North-South battle that he himself had been in it for more than two decades.

As my personal view, this is the impact of having only one party in power without other parties involvement in the system. South has many different parties which if the situation allowed, all could participate in a peace process to mitigate that problem at once.

In that case, SPLM party needs to create a new system to make a coalition with other parties. If it insists on owning the south by itself by using SPLA army, it may end up with many small army groups which will carry out different kinds of agendas.

For the sake of the nation and using of brutal acts during the election, president Kiir should apologize to the general community of south, victims of this war, veterans whom he denied and independent candidates.

He also needs to put in mind and treat the SPLA as a national army for entire south to avoid another future military reaction. Besides, it's known that the military complies with president's order, but the president himself should respect citizens rights.

All these blames fall on the president as he gives the country to friends and relatives like a piece of cake.

We have to remind ourselves that GOSS doesn't need to sleep in this time of political war with North. Coming game will not be like 2008 census and April 2010 national election rigging. Although the country is under critical condition, it still needs to campaign for the Referendum instead.

At this time, peace in the south is in the hands of Kiir to avoid unsustainable rebellion.

What Can Help The Most?

What can help the most in this contemporary conflict in south? Blame, accusation, challenge, criticism, implication, advise or none of the above.
The answer is difficult because any matter that involves military action has few people to tackle it. I think the answer to this war should be Salva Kiir, Riek Machar, James Wani, Pagan Amum, Paulino Matip and chief of staff James Hoth Mai, by using peaceful approach. These most influential figures I hope will diffuse or buffer this conflict and yet deserve blaming, discredit or credit.
